What Are Adaptogens?

Adaptogens are plants and fungi traditionally used to help the body adapt to physical, mental and emotional stress. Rather than simply stimulating or calming the body, they are valued for supporting resilience and helping physiological systems respond more appropriately to changing demands.

The term adaptogen was developed through research into substances that could increase the body's resistance to different forms of stress while supporting normal physiological function and helping the body return towards balance.

Different adaptogens have different strengths. Some are better known for supporting mental energy and focus, others for calm and recovery, physical stamina, immune resilience or general vitality.

Some of these have stronger scientific recognition as adaptogens than others, while others are classified as probable or possible adaptogens based on their traditional use and emerging research.

What Are Nootropics?

Nootropics are substances associated with cognitive function. They are generally used to support areas such as memory, concentration, mental clarity, learning and mental performance.

Unlike the term adaptogen, which describes how a substance helps the body respond to stress, nootropic describes its relationship with brain and cognitive function.

Natural nootropics can therefore include herbs and medicinal mushrooms that also belong to other botanical or functional groups.

Of these, Lion's Mane is particularly associated with cognitive and neurological support, while Gotu Kola has a long history of traditional use for memory, concentration and mental clarity. Rhodiola is especially relevant when mental fatigue, stress and cognitive performance overlap, supporting focus, attention and mental stamina during demanding periods. Red Ginseng combines adaptogenic qualities with cognitive support and is traditionally used to promote mental energy, concentration and performance, particularly during periods of fatigue.

What Are Medicinal Mushrooms?

Medicinal mushrooms are fungi traditionally used for their health-supporting properties rather than primarily as culinary mushrooms.

They contain naturally occurring compounds such as beta-glucans, polysaccharides and other bioactive constituents. Different mushrooms have very different characteristics, which is why they should not all be treated as though they provide the same benefits.

Some are traditionally associated with immune resilience and recovery, others with energy and physical performance, while Lion's Mane has become particularly well known for its relationship with the brain and cognitive function.

One Plant Can Belong to More Than One Group

These categories overlap.

Adaptogen, nootropic and medicinal mushroom do not describe the same thing. A plant or mushroom may therefore fit into more than one category depending on its properties and traditional use.

For example:

Lion's Mane
Medicinal Mushroom + Nootropic
Best known for its relationship with memory, concentration and cognitive function.

Cordyceps
Medicinal Mushroom + Adaptogen
Traditionally associated with energy, stamina, physical performance and resilience.

Reishi
Medicinal Mushroom + Adaptogenic support
Traditionally valued for resilience, recovery, immune support and balance.

Rhodiola
Adaptogen + Nootropic
Particularly interesting when stress, mental fatigue, focus and performance overlap.

Red Ginseng
Adaptogen + Nootropic
Traditionally associated with vitality and resilience, while also being used to support mental and physical performance.

This overlap is one of the reasons adaptogenic plants and medicinal mushrooms are so interesting. Rather than choosing them simply because they belong to a particular category, the key is understanding which plant or mushroom best matches what you want to support.
