The origins: Southern Africa’s desert medicine

Devil’s claw (Harpagophytum procumbens) comes from the Kalahari Desert and the savannas of Namibia, Botswana, and South Africa. Its story begins with the Khoisan and Bantu peoples, who have used the root for hundreds — very likely thousands — of years.

They worked with devil’s claw as a pain-relieving, anti-inflammatory, and digestive tonic plant. It was used for:

• Joint and muscle stiffness
• Rheumatic pains
• Difficult childbirth
• Digestive discomfort
• Fever and general body aches
• Wound healing (the dried tubers were sometimes used as a poultice)

In traditional use, people often dried the tubers and brewed them into a strong, bitter decoction. The plant’s bitterness was recognised as deeply stimulating for digestion, while its pain-relieving effect was considered one of its most valuable gifts.

How it reached Europe

Devil’s claw entered European herbalism in the early 1900s. A German colonial farmer, Gustav Mehnert, observed its traditional use and became fascinated by how effectively it relieved pain. He introduced it to European herbalists and pharmacists, and from there it gradually gained popularity.

By the mid-20th century, herbal researchers in Germany and France began studying it more closely, confirming its strong anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects. It was soon recognised as a natural support for arthritis, mobility issues, tendonitis, and rheumatic discomfort.

The symbolic side

Its name comes from the plant’s strange, claw-like seed pods, which look like hooked talons. These hooks help the plant latch onto animals, spreading its seeds across the savannah. Many healers saw the shape as symbolic of the plant’s ability to “grip” pain and pull it out of the body.

Modern use

Today, devil’s claw is widely used across Europe in capsules, extracts, and topical preparations. But its heart is still very much rooted in the Kalahari - a desert plant that has carried its wisdom through generations.

It was, and remains, a plant for movement, comfort, and easing the weight of physical inflammation.
