Understanding White Willow Bark

White willow (Salix alba) is a large deciduous tree traditionally found near rivers, streams and other damp environments across Europe and parts of western and central Asia.

It belongs to the Salicaceae, or willow family, a botanical group that includes numerous Salix species.

The bark is the part traditionally collected for herbal preparations. It contains a complex mixture of naturally occurring plant constituents, including phenolic glycosides known as salicylates. Salicin is the constituent most commonly associated with willow bark, although the bark contains considerably more than this single compound.

This distinction is worth making. White willow bark is not simply "natural aspirin". It is whole botanical material containing salicin alongside tannins, flavonoids, polyphenols and other naturally occurring constituents.

Willow has accompanied human settlements for thousands of years, particularly along rivers and wetlands where the tree naturally thrives.

Its flexible branches made willow valuable for practical purposes such as basketry, fencing and woven structures, while different parts of the tree also became part of European botanical traditions.

The bark gained particular scientific attention in the 19th century, when European researchers began investigating the compounds responsible for the distinctive characteristics of willow. Salicin was isolated from willow during this period and became an important step in the developing understanding of salicylate chemistry.

Further work with salicylic compounds eventually contributed to the development of acetylsalicylic acid, better known today as aspirin.
