A little history

Origins and antiquity
The species is native to the Mediterranean region, Central Europe, and parts of Western Asia. Archaeological evidence shows that humans began cultivating grapes around 6,000-8,000 years ago in the South Caucasus (modern-day Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan). Grapes were valued both as food and as the basis for fermentation - wine-making is practically as old as agriculture itself.

Greek and Roman medicine
Classical authors such as Hippocrates, Dioscorides, and Galen praised different parts of the grapevine.

Leaves: used externally as poultices for inflammation and bleeding.

Grapes & juice: recommended for digestion and hydration.

Wine: not only a drink but also a vehicle for herbal medicines and an antiseptic.

Middle Ages
Monastic medicine carried grapevine knowledge into the medieval period. Hildegard of Bingen (12th century) suggested vine leaves and sap for skin conditions. Red vine in particular became linked with blood circulation, likely because of its color and a touch of “doctrine of signatures” thinking (the medieval idea that the appearance of a plant hinted at its use).

Early modern period
By the 16th-18th centuries, European herbalists like Nicholas Culpeper mentioned vine leaves, tendrils, and sap as remedies for headaches, wounds, and “fluxes of blood.” Wine continued to be both a daily beverage and a medicinal base.

19th–20th century phytotherapy
With the rise of pharmacognosy (the study of medicines from plants), scientists began isolating active compounds. Red vine leaves (Vitis vinifera L. folium) were found to contain polyphenols, anthocyanins, and flavonoids, which have antioxidant and vascular-protective properties. By the late 19th century in France and Germany, standardized extracts of vine leaves were already part of the pharmacopeia.

Modern use
Today, red vine leaf extracts are officially recognized in European herbal medicine traditions (such as the European Medicines Agency’s herbal monographs) for contributing to the relief of tired, heavy legs and circulatory discomfort. Beyond medicine, the grapevine remains central in culture: wine, raisins, grape seed oil, and even grape skins in cosmetics.

So, the humble grapevine has been:

- A food source (fresh fruit, raisins).
- A drink (wine and juice).
- A medicine (leaves, sap, and seeds).
- A symbol (abundance, vitality, ritual).

It’s a plant that’s been woven into human history as deeply as wheat or olive.
