A Traditional Botanical for Movement & Mobility Routines

When stiffness, reduced freedom of movement or simply the wear and tear of an active life makes you pay more attention to your joints, Devil’s Claw is one of the classic botanicals worth knowing about.

Devil’s Claw (Harpagophytum procumbens) has a particularly strong association with traditional European herbal practice around joints, movement and mobility. This is the main reason people seek out the plant today, and what distinguishes it from a general everyday botanical supplement.

It is especially relevant for people building a botanical routine around movement and mobility, whether that means staying active as the years pass, supporting an active lifestyle, or simply giving more attention to the body after years of physical work, sport or repetitive movement.

Each daily serving provides 1140 mg of pure organic Devil’s Claw root powder, with no unnecessary fillers or additives.

Why Devil’s Claw?

Devil’s Claw is not a generic “wellbeing” herb. Its reputation comes from the secondary roots, which contain naturally occurring bitter iridoid glycosides, particularly harpagosides.

These characteristic plant compounds are one of the reasons Harpagophytum has attracted such sustained interest within herbalism and why the root continues to be used in botanical preparations today.

For someone comparing several herbal supplements for a movement and mobility-focused routine, Devil’s Claw is therefore a much more specific botanical choice than a general multibotanical supplement.

More Than a Mobility Herb

There is another side to Devil’s Claw that is often overlooked.

The root has a distinctly bitter botanical character, and bitter plants have a long place in European herbal traditions, particularly in preparations taken around meals. Devil’s Claw has therefore also featured historically in digestive and appetite-focused herbal practice.

This makes the plant especially interesting because its traditional identity spans two quite different areas of herbalism: movement-focused botanical traditions and the traditional use of bitter herbs around food and appetite.

🌿What Makes Devil’s Claw Different?

The rather dramatic name comes from the plant’s unusual fruit, which develops long, curved, hook-like projections resembling claws.

But the part used in herbal preparations is not the fruit. It is primarily the plant’s fleshy secondary storage roots.

These roots contain a characteristic group of naturally occurring compounds known as iridoid glycosides, including harpagoside. This distinctive phytochemical profile has made the root an important subject within modern herbal research as well as traditional botanical practice.

For customers, the simplest distinction is this: Devil’s Claw is a specialised botanical rather than an all-purpose supplement. It is most commonly chosen by people specifically exploring herbal traditions connected with movement, mobility and the physical demands of everyday life.

A little history

Devil’s Claw is native to the dry regions of southern Africa, particularly areas of the Kalahari.

Long before the plant became familiar in European herbalism, indigenous communities of southern Africa had developed their own traditional uses for Harpagophytum. The plant was later introduced into European botanical practice during the early twentieth century.

Its unusual English name comes from its woody fruit. As the fruit matures, it forms several long hooks or “claws”, an adaptation that allows it to catch on animals and helps disperse its seeds.

Interestingly, these striking fruits are not the part normally used in herbal supplements. Herbal preparations are made from the underground secondary storage roots, which are harvested, sliced and dried.

Over time, Devil’s Claw became particularly well known in European herbal traditions associated with movement and mobility, while its intensely bitter root also gave it a place among traditional bitter botanicals.

That combination has made Harpagophytum procumbens one of the more distinctive southern African plants to become established in modern European herbalism.

FAQ

🌿 Why would I choose Devil’s Claw?
Devil’s Claw is particularly interesting if you are looking for a botanical traditionally associated with movement and mobility. Unlike a general wellbeing supplement, it has a very specific history of use in herbal traditions centred around joints, movement and physical comfort.

🌿 What part of Devil’s Claw is used?
The supplement is made from the root of Harpagophytum procumbens. The secondary storage roots are the part traditionally used in herbal preparations and naturally contain characteristic iridoid glycosides, including harpagoside.

🌿 How much Devil’s Claw do I get per day?
Each capsule provides 285 mg of organic Devil’s Claw root powder. A daily serving of four capsules provides 1140 mg.

🌿 Is Devil’s Claw only associated with movement and mobility?
No. Devil’s Claw is also a distinctly bitter botanical and has traditionally been used within herbal practices concerned with digestion and appetite. Movement and mobility, however, are the main reasons many people seek out Devil’s Claw today.

🌿 How long does one box last?
At four capsules per day, a box of 200 capsules provides 50 days of use.

🌿 Can Devil’s Claw be combined with other botanical supplements?
Yes. Devil’s Claw can be combined with other botanicals depending on what you want your routine to focus on.

For a movement and mobility-focused routine, it can be paired with White Willow Bark or Turmeric, botanicals with their own long traditions of use around joints, movement and physical comfort.

For a broader routine focused on mobility and connective tissues, it can also be combined with Collagen + Hyaluronic Acid, bringing nutritional support alongside the botanical approach.

If your interest in Devil’s Claw is more connected to its traditional bitter-herb use around digestion and appetite, it can instead be paired with botanicals such as Black Radish.
