A Calming Botanical for Relaxation and Restful Nights

California Poppy (Eschscholzia californica) is a well-known herbal plant valued for its calming properties and its connection to nervous system relaxation and sleep. Its naturally occurring alkaloids, including protopine, have attracted interest for their interaction with the nervous system.

Herbiolys produces this organic extract from freshly harvested California Poppy, macerated directly at the harvesting site to retain the qualities of the fresh plant.

Benefits

  • Relaxation: Helps promote calm and relaxation.

  • Sleep: Supports falling asleep and restful sleep.

  • Nervous tension: Helps ease feelings of tension and nervousness.

Who Is It For?

California Poppy is particularly interesting for people who:

  • Struggle to relax or switch off in the evening.

  • Have difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep.

  • Feel mentally restless after stressful days.

🌿California Poppy in Phytotherapy

California Poppy is considered a calming and mildly sedative herb in Western phytotherapy, with a particular affinity for the nervous system.

Herbalists have traditionally used the aerial parts of the plant for:
- Insomnia and disturbed sleep: Particularly when difficulty sleeping is associated with nervous tension or an overactive mind.
- Nervous agitation: During periods of heightened nervousness, irritability and difficulty relaxing.
- Stress-related restlessness: When mental tension makes it difficult to settle physically or emotionally.
- Mild nervous discomfort: Including situations where tension and restlessness occur together.

🌿Botanical Compounds

California Poppy contains several naturally occurring alkaloids, including protopine, allocryptopine and californidine. These compounds are of interest in phytotherapy research, particularly in relation to the plant's effects on the central nervous system.

Although California Poppy belongs to the same botanical family as the opium poppy (Papaver somniferum), they are different species with distinct alkaloid profiles. California Poppy is not a source of opium.

🌿Fresh Plant Extraction

Herbiolys uses freshly harvested organic California Poppy, placing the plant material into maceration immediately after harvesting, without drying or freezing it first. This method distinguishes fresh-plant extracts from preparations made using dried botanical material.

Usage tips

Recommended daily intake: Take 15 drops twice daily, morning and evening.

How to take: Place the drops directly under the tongue or dilute them in a small amount of low-mineral water. Take away from meals.

Recommended course: Use for three weeks, followed by a one-week break before starting another course if needed.

Evening routine: For those incorporating California Poppy into their bedtime routine, the evening dose can be taken as part of a quiet wind-down ritual.

Quality

At Herbiolys, quality begins in nature and is preserved at every stage of production.

Carefully Selected, Fully Traceable Herbs
All plants are harvested by accredited producer-pickers, ensuring complete traceability from the field to the finished product. This direct relationship with the harvesters guarantees transparency, integrity, and respect for the plant.

Organic Plants from Protected Natural Areas
The organic herbs are primarily sourced from preserved natural environments, far from pollution and environmental contamination. For protected or rarer species, certified organic cultivation is used to safeguard biodiversity.

Ethical and Responsible Harvesting
Harvesting is carried out in accordance with the SIMPLES Syndicate Charter and organic farming standards. Great care is taken to protect plant populations and maintain ecological balance at each harvesting site. Respect for nature is not an option - it is a principle.

Immediate On-Site Maceration
To preserve the full vitality of the plant, maceration takes place immediately at the harvest location. This prevents oxidation and enzyme degradation while protecting chlorophyll and the plant’s naturally occurring active compounds. The result is a vibrant extract that reflects both the essence of the plant and the energy of its natural habitat.

Glass Storage from Start to Finish
All macerations are prepared and stored exclusively in glass demijohns and bottles from harvest through to the finished product. This ensures purity and stability without unwanted interactions.

Hand-Dynamized Extracts
During the final packaging stage, each extract is dynamized by hand. This traditional process enhances dispersion and assimilation of the plant’s active compounds while supporting the energetic quality of the preparation.

A Rigorous, Artisan Protocol
From harvesting to labeling, every step is carried out with precision and care. This strict production protocol ensures exceptional quality, purity, and effectiveness in every bottle.

A little history

California Poppy (Eschscholzia californica) has a long history in the botanical traditions of western North America. Indigenous peoples of California used the plant in various herbal preparations, including those associated with pain, nervous complaints and sleep.

The plant received its scientific name in the early 19th century. During a Russian scientific expedition to the Pacific coast, botanist Adelbert von Chamisso described the golden-flowered plant and named it Eschscholzia in honour of his fellow expedition member, physician and naturalist Johann Friedrich von Eschscholtz.

As California Poppy became better known in Europe, it found a place in Western phytotherapy. Herbalists valued its mildly sedative and calming properties, using it in preparations for nervous agitation, difficulty falling asleep and disturbed nights.

An interesting botanical detail is that California Poppy belongs to the same family as the opium poppy, yet has a distinctly different chemical composition. Its characteristic alkaloids helped establish its own identity within herbal medicine.

Today, California Poppy remains one of the recognised plants in traditional Western herbalism associated with relaxation, nervous restlessness and sleep.
