A little history

Indigenous origins
Cranberries (Vaccinium macrocarpon) are native to North America, thriving in cool, acidic bogs from Canada down to the northeastern United States. Indigenous peoples have used them for thousands of years - as food, dye, and traditional medicine.
They mixed crushed cranberries with dried meat and fat to make pemmican, a nutrient-dense travel food that lasted for months. Cranberries were also used in poultices, especially for wounds, thanks to their acidity and tannin-rich nature.

Early botanical interest
When European settlers arrived, they quickly adopted cranberry use. By the 1600s, colonists were cooking cranberries much like Indigenous communities: in stews, porridges, and preserved sauces. Cranberry bogs were documented as early as 1620 in New England.

Settlers also noticed something fascinating: cranberries kept sailors healthier on long sea voyages. This made sense later, when science showed they contain vitamin C. So cranberries ended up joining limes and sauerkraut as early anti-scurvy foods.

Commercial cultivation
The first commercial cranberry beds appeared in the early 19th century. Cultivators learned to manage water levels in bogs, preventing frost damage and controlling pests. By the late 1800s, cranberries were already a well-known crop across New England, Wisconsin, and parts of Canada.

Their reputation for supporting urinary tract comfort - which modern science attributes to compounds called proanthocyanidins (PACs) - began forming around this time as well. Women’s herbal guides from the late 1800s mention cranberry teas for “water flow” and “urinary well-being.”

Modern era
Today, cranberries are a major agricultural product in the United States and Canada, and have become a global symbol of North American herbal tradition.
Their uses expanded into:
• culinary traditions (sauces, juices, dried cranberries)
• skincare (antioxidant-rich extracts)
• supplements for urinary tract support
• functional foods and beverages

Cranberry capsules, in particular, continue this long herbal lineage - concentrating the berry’s natural compounds into a convenient, stable form.
