Organic Blue Chamomile Essential Oil: A Special Choice for Sensitive Skin

Looking for an essential oil to include in your skincare routine for sensitive, delicate or dry skin? Blue Chamomile, also known as Blue Tansy, is one of the most distinctive botanicals used in aromatic skincare, particularly appreciated in facial oils and gentle body care blends.

Its remarkable deep blue colour comes from chamazulene, a naturally occurring compound formed during steam distillation. This gives Blue Tansy its unmistakable appearance and makes it especially interesting in botanical skincare formulations.

With a soft, sweet, fruity-herbal aroma, Blue Chamomile blends beautifully with Lavender, Frankincense and Geranium, making it a lovely addition to facial oils, massage blends and relaxing evening rituals.

Certified organic and distilled from Tanacetum annuum grown in Morocco, this is a beautiful choice for anyone who appreciates carefully selected, distinctive botanical ingredients.

🌿What makes Blue Chamomile different?

Despite its common name, Blue Chamomile is not a true chamomile. It belongs to the genus Tanacetum, whereas German Chamomile belongs to Matricaria and Roman Chamomile to Chamaemelum.

The essential oil is particularly distinctive for its rich blue colour, associated with chamazulene. This blue compound develops during the distillation process from naturally occurring plant precursors.

The living plant has small, bright yellow flower heads, making the striking blue colour of the distilled oil all the more interesting.

Blue Tansy is an aromatic botanical worth discovering for its unusual colour, characteristic chemistry and gently sweet, fruity scent.

A little history

The name Tanacetum has traditionally been associated with the Greek word athanasia, meaning immortality or eternity. The connection is often explained by the way tansy flowers retain their appearance when dried.

Blue Tansy (Tanacetum annuum), also known as Blue Chamomile or Annual Tansy, is a North African aromatic plant particularly associated with Morocco.

Morocco has a long tradition of botanical medicine, including the use of locally gathered plants in preparations for skin complaints and other everyday ailments. However, the historical uses of Tanacetum annuum itself are less extensively documented than those of better-known medicinal plants such as German and Roman Chamomile.

In modern aromatherapy, Blue Tansy essential oil has become especially associated with diluted topical preparations and skincare for delicate or sensitive skin. Its distinctive deep blue colour comes from chamazulene, which forms during steam distillation of the plant's yellow-flowered aerial parts.

Despite the name Blue Chamomile, this plant is not a true chamomile. It is also different from common tansy (Tanacetum vulgare), a distinction that matters when exploring botanical history and traditional herbal uses.

Blends well with

Blends beautifully with Lavender Fine, Roman Chamomile, Frankincense, Geranium Bourbon and Helichrysum Italicum. Also pairs well with Neroli, Sandalwood, Sweet Orange, Bergamot FCF and Cedarwood Atlas. Its sweet, fruity-herbal aroma adds softness and depth to floral, woody and citrus compositions.
