A little history

Burdock has been valued for centuries in both Eastern and Western herbal traditions.

Europe – Since the Middle Ages, burdock root was one of the most popular “blood purifiers.” Herbalists recommended it for skin eruptions, gout, rheumatism, and as a spring detox tonic. It was also eaten as a vegetable in some regions.

Asia – In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), burdock seed (niubangzi) is used to clear internal “heat” and support lung and throat health. The root is also eaten in Japan as gobo, where it remains a staple food today for its nourishing and detoxifying qualities.

North America – Indigenous peoples adopted burdock after its introduction by Europeans, using it for skin problems, digestive support, and as a general tonic.
