A little history

Hawthorn, a small thorny tree from the rose family, has been revered in Europe, Asia, and North America for centuries - both for its healing properties and symbolic meaning.

Ancient Roots

In traditional Chinese medicine, hawthorn berries (called shan zha) have been used since at least the Tang Dynasty (7th century) to aid digestion, improve circulation, and support the heart.

In Greek and Roman times, hawthorn branches symbolized hope and protection. The Greeks associated it with weddings and fertility, while the Romans often used hawthorn in ceremonies to ward off evil spirits.

Medieval Europe

During the Middle Ages, hawthorn was both a medicinal and magical plant. It was believed to protect against lightning and evil influences. Herbalists prescribed it for heart complaints, circulation problems, and as a calming tonic.

Hawthorn also became linked to May Day celebrations. The flowering branches, known as “May blossom,” were used to decorate homes and altars, celebrating spring, renewal, and life force.

Native American Traditions

Various Indigenous peoples of North America used hawthorn for digestive issues, heart weakness, and as a general tonic. The berries were sometimes eaten fresh, dried, or prepared as a decoction.

18th–19th Century Herbal Medicine

By the late 1800s, hawthorn gained recognition in Western herbal medicine as a reliable cardiotonic. Irish physician Dr. Green is often credited with popularizing its use for heart conditions in Europe, after treating thousands of patients with hawthorn extracts.

It was prescribed for angina, irregular heartbeat, and circulation problems, long before modern pharmaceuticals existed.

Modern Use

Today, hawthorn remains one of the best-researched plants for heart and circulatory health. Extracts of the flowers, leaves, and berries are widely used in Europe, especially in Germany and France, where phytotherapy is well integrated into mainstream medicine.

Beyond the heart, hawthorn continues to be valued for its calming, sedative effects, making it a natural ally for stress and sleep difficulties.

Symbolism

Hawthorn is often considered a “threshold” tree in folklore - growing at boundaries, hedgerows, and sacred spaces. It represents protection, transition, and the connection between worlds. In Celtic tradition, it was one of the “fairy trees,” deeply respected and never cut down without ritual.

Our Bioptimal range brings together food supplements made in France, with a focus on carefully selected ingredients and straightforward formulations. Some feature a single botanical, while others combine plants or nutrients in formulas designed for a particular type of daily routine.

We look beyond the front of the pack. Ingredients, daily amounts, quality, certification, recommended use and precautions all matter when we decide what belongs at Elliotti.
