A little history

The name "mandarin" has an interesting historical and cultural background. It is believed that the fruit was named after the high-ranking officials of the Chinese imperial court, known as Mandarins, during the time of the Qing dynasty. These officials wore robes in vibrant colors, including orange, which likely inspired the connection to the fruit.

Mandarins were also a symbol of prosperity and good fortune in Chinese culture. The fruit, originally from China, was often given as a traditional gift during the Chinese New Year as a sign of abundance and blessings. Its sweet, fragrant nature made it a prized gift, and this custom continues in parts of China and Southeast Asia today.

The name "mandarin" was introduced to the Western world by Portuguese explorers who brought the fruit back to Europe from Asia in the 16th century. Over time, the name became synonymous with this variety of small, sweet citrus fruits.
