A little history

Tarragon is an ancient herb with a rich history that blends medicine, mythology, and culinary tradition. Its use dates back centuries, long before it became a staple in French cuisine.

🌿Origins in Central Asia

Tarragon is native to the steppes of Central Asia, where it grew wild and was valued for its aromatic and medicinal properties. From there, it gradually spread westward through trade routes and cultural exchanges.

🌿The “Dragon Herb” – Medieval Europe

The name tarragon comes from the Arabic “tarkhun,” later adapted into Latin as dracunculus, meaning “little dragon.”

This gave rise to one of its most enduring legends. The plant’s twisting roots were believed to resemble a coiled dragon, and it was traditionally used to treat snake bites and venomous wounds. According to the Doctrine of Signatures, plants resembling certain forms were thought to heal related conditions.

Because of this, Tarragon became known as the “dragon herb,” associated with protection and vitality.

🌿Traditional Medicinal Use

Throughout history, Tarragon was used in herbal medicine for digestive discomfort, intestinal issues, toothaches by chewing the leaves for their mild numbing effect, nervous tension, and to stimulate appetite.

Its reputation as a digestive and calming herb has remained consistent across cultures.

🌿Adoption in European Cuisine

Tarragon gained prominence in France, where it became one of the most important culinary herbs.

It is a key ingredient in Béarnaise sauce, Dijon mustard, and herb-infused vinegars. French tarragon is especially prized for its refined and delicate aroma.

🌿Modern Use

Today, Tarragon continues to be valued both in culinary traditions and in aromatherapy and naturopathy, where it is appreciated for its targeted action on digestion, spasms, and nervous tension.

🌿A Plant Rooted in Tradition

From ancient steppes to medieval folklore and refined European kitchens, Tarragon has maintained its place as a herb of both function and character. It is respected not for being a general remedy, but for its precise and powerful action.
