100% organic meadowsweet flowering tops (Filipendula ulmaria)

Meadowsweet has a long tradition of use for joint comfort and mobility. This gentle yet effective infusion supports flexibility and helps ease everyday muscle and joint discomfort, making it a valuable ally for an active body and healthy movement.

Joint health & mobility

Meadowsweet is well known for its soothing action on joints such as the knees, hips, and elbows. Naturally rich in salicylate derivatives and flavonoids, it helps support joint flexibility while contributing to the relief of muscle and joint tension.

Usage tips

Daily infusion (standard use)
Pour 150–250 ml of hot water (maximum 80°C) over:
• 4 teaspoons of flowering tops (approximately 3–6 g per cup), or
• 14–18 g per litre of water per day

Cover, stir occasionally, and let infuse for 10–15 minutes. Strain before drinking. This can be enjoyed several times a day.

Stronger, medicinal-style infusion
For a more concentrated preparation, allow the herbs to infuse for at least 1 hour or longer before straining. This method extracts more of the plant’s soothing compounds and is traditionally used for deeper joint support.

A little history

Meadowsweet (Filipendula ulmaria) has a long and rather distinguished history in European herbalism, folklore, and early medicine, where it earned a reputation as a plant of comfort, protection, and quiet strength.

Native to damp meadows, riverbanks, and wetlands across Europe and parts of Asia, meadowsweet has been known and used since antiquity. Its sweet, almond-like fragrance made it a valued strewing herb in the Middle Ages. Fresh flowering tops were scattered on floors and used to scent halls and churches, especially during celebrations, both to perfume the air and to create a sense of freshness and wellbeing.

In traditional folk medicine, meadowsweet was prized for easing aches and pains, supporting joints, and calming fevers. Long before modern chemistry understood why, herbalists noticed that infusions of the flowering tops brought relief to stiff, painful joints and sore muscles. This observation later gained scientific relevance in the 19th century, when salicylate compounds were identified in the plant. These natural constituents inspired the development of acetylsalicylic acid, better known as aspirin. In fact, the name aspirin partly comes from an old botanical name for meadowsweet, Spiraea.

Meadowsweet also held an important place in Celtic tradition. It was considered one of the sacred herbs of the Druids, associated with healing, peace, and emotional balance. The plant was often linked to water and the softening of tension, both physical and symbolic, reflecting its affinity for damp landscapes and its gentle yet effective nature.

Throughout European herbal traditions, meadowsweet remained a staple for joint comfort, rheumatic complaints, and general bodily ease. Unlike harsher remedies, it was valued for working in harmony with the body, supporting comfort without overwhelming it.

Today, meadowsweet continues to be appreciated as a classic herbal ally for muscles and joints, carrying with it centuries of practical use, folklore, and botanical wisdom rooted in the quiet strength of the meadows where it grows.
