Organic Tanning is a plant-based beauty supplement made from organic urucum (Bixa orellana), a tropical plant whose intensely red-orange seeds are naturally rich in colourful plant pigments, including bixin, a carotenoid.

It is designed for people who want to make skin and complexion part of their beauty routine from within, particularly during the sunnier months or before and during a holiday. Rather than being a conventional self-tanning cosmetic applied to the skin, this is a simple daily botanical supplement based entirely around organic urucum seed powder.

What makes urucum particularly interesting is its remarkable natural pigmentation. The seeds have been valued for centuries for their vivid colour and are naturally rich in carotenoid pigments. Each capsule provides 300 mg of organic urucum powder, with the recommended daily serving of three capsules providing 900 mg.

This makes Organic Tanning an interesting choice if you are looking for a natural, plant-based addition to your summer beauty routine, especially if you prefer a simple formula rather than a complex blend of multiple ingredients.

The capsules are made in France, use a vegetable capsule and contain no added fillers. With 200 capsules per pack, one box provides approximately 66 days at the recommended intake of three capsules per day.

More information

Urucum (Bixa orellana), also known as annatto or achiote, is particularly interesting for summer beauty routines because of the extraordinary concentration of red-orange carotenoid pigments found in its seeds.

🌿Naturally Rich in Carotenoid Pigments

The characteristic colour of urucum comes primarily from bixin, together with related carotenoid compounds such as norbixin. These natural pigments give the seeds their unmistakable deep orange-red colour.

Carotenoids are also the wider family of plant pigments that includes beta-carotene, responsible for many of the yellow, orange and red colours found naturally in fruits and vegetables.

This connection between urucum, carotenoids, pigmentation and the skin is one of the reasons the plant has become particularly associated with pre-sun and tanning supplements in Europe.

🌿Why Is Urucum Used in Tanning Supplements?

Urucum is not simply another general beauty botanical. Its appeal comes specifically from its naturally high content of colourful carotenoid pigments and its long association with skin colouring.

This is why urucum capsules are commonly chosen as part of a pre-sun and summer beauty routine, often started before a holiday or the beginning of the sunnier season and continued during periods of sun exposure.

The important distinction is that these capsules are not a conventional self-tanner. They do not contain the cosmetic tanning ingredient DHA and are taken orally rather than applied to the skin.

🌿Traditional Use of Urucum and the Skin

Urucum has an especially fascinating relationship with the skin in its native tropical Americas.

Indigenous peoples of the Amazon and other parts of Central and South America have traditionally crushed the intensely coloured seeds to create red-orange preparations used for body painting, skin colouring, ceremonial decoration and protection of exposed skin.

This traditional use is one reason urucum is sometimes known as the “lipstick tree”. The same pigment-rich seeds have also been used to colour foods, textiles and other materials.

Today, that remarkable botanical characteristic has given urucum a new place in European summer beauty and pre-sun routines, particularly in supplements designed for people interested in preparing their beauty routine ahead of the sunnier months.

🌿What About Antioxidants and UV Exposure?

Urucum contains carotenoids, a family of plant compounds widely studied for their antioxidant properties. However, this should not be confused with sunscreen.

Organic Tanning Capsules do not replace topical sun protection and should not be presented as providing an SPF, preventing sunburn or protecting the skin against UV radiation.

Usage tips

Take 3 capsules per day with a large glass of water during meals. Do not exceed the recommended daily dose. This food supplement should not replace a varied, balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle.

Take the recommended daily dose of Organic Urucum Capsules with water as part of your wellness routine. For best results, combine with a balanced diet and healthy sun exposure practices.

🌞 1. Supports Natural Glow & Skin Radiance
The high carotenoid content not only prepares skin for tanning but may also improve overall skin tone and glow, giving a healthy, golden complexion even before sun exposure.

💪 2. Boosts Antioxidant Defenses
Urucum is up to 100 times richer in carotenoids than carrots. These compounds fight free radicals and may help slow skin aging caused by sun and pollution.

🔥 3. Anti-inflammatory & Soothing
Traditionally used to calm skin irritation, urucum may also support the skin after sun exposure, helping with redness and inflammation from UV or heat.

🌱 4. Rich in Trace Minerals
Contains zinc, magnesium, copper, and selenium, which are essential for collagen production, skin repair, and sun tolerance.

⚠️ 5. Can Slightly Tint the Skin or Stool (normal!)
Because of its high bixin content, some users may notice a slight orangey tint in skin tone (subtle and often desirable), or in stool - a normal, harmless effect of carotenoid pigments.

⏳ 6. Best Results with Early & Consistent Use
For best tanning support, it's recommended to start supplementing 2–3 weeks before sun exposure. This allows carotenoids to build up in the skin and deliver their full protective and glow-enhancing benefits.

🌍 7. Clean & Sustainable
You'll love that our urucum is 100% natural, certified organic, and additive-free - no fillers, no synthetic dyes. Just pure plant power, as traditionally used.

A little history

Urucum’s connection with the skin began long before the arrival of modern cosmetics. Indigenous peoples of Central and South America traditionally used the vivid red-orange pigment from Bixa orellana seeds directly on the body, both for colouring and on skin exposed to the tropical environment.

Centuries later, urucum found a new place in cosmetics. Its principal pigment, bixin, became valued as a natural colourant, and annatto extracts also appeared in products associated with sun and tanning.

A further shift came during the 1970s, when carotenoids began to be used orally in products intended to influence the appearance of the skin and tanning, particularly in Northern Europe. This helped establish the modern idea of the pre-sun or tanning supplement, where colourful plant compounds are consumed as part of a beauty routine rather than applied directly to the skin.

More recently, scientific interest has moved beyond colour alone. Researchers have investigated carotenoids and the skin’s response to UV exposure and oxidative stress, including experimental research into bixin and cellular protective pathways. This research is interesting, but it does not mean that urucum capsules function as sunscreen or that they can replace topical sun protection.

Urucum has therefore travelled an unusual path: from a traditional botanical pigment applied to the skin, to an ingredient in cosmetics, and eventually to the modern European pre-sun beauty routine.

FAQ

🌿 Why would I choose Urucum capsules before the sunnier months?
Urucum is particularly interesting because its seeds are naturally rich in red-orange carotenoid pigments, especially bixin. This distinctive botanical composition is why urucum has become closely associated with pre-sun, tanning and summer beauty routines in Europe. It is a simple choice for someone who wants to include a pigment-rich botanical in their routine before and during the sunnier months.

🌿 When should I start taking Urucum?
Many people choose to introduce urucum before a holiday or at the beginning of the sunnier season, rather than waiting until they are already spending a lot of time outdoors. It can then be continued as part of the daily beauty routine during the period when sun exposure is more frequent.

🌿 How much Urucum does the daily serving provide?
Each capsule contains 300 mg of organic urucum (Bixa orellana) seed powder. The recommended daily serving of three capsules therefore provides 900 mg of urucum seed powder.

🌿 How long does one bottle last?
The bottle contains 200 capsules. At the recommended intake of three capsules per day, one bottle provides approximately 66 days of use, making it suitable for a longer pre-sun and summer routine.

🌿 Is this a self-tanning product?
No. This is an oral food supplement containing organic urucum seed powder, not a cosmetic self-tanner applied to the skin. It should therefore not be confused with products containing cosmetic tanning ingredients such as DHA.

🌿 Does Urucum replace sunscreen?
No. Urucum capsules do not provide an SPF and should never be used as a substitute for appropriate sun protection. They are a botanical supplement for a summer beauty routine, not a sunscreen.

🌿 Is this a pure Urucum supplement?
Yes. The formula is refreshingly simple: each capsule provides 300 mg of organic urucum seed powder, enclosed in a vegetable HPMC capsule. There is no complex blend of other botanicals, so you know exactly what you are taking.
