Ancient Andean Vitality Food for Modern, Active Days

If you want to bring more nourishment into your morning routine without reaching for another caffeinated drink, maca is one of the classic superfoods worth discovering.

Grown in the highlands of Peru, maca (Lepidium meyenii) has been cultivated and eaten in the Andes for generations. Traditionally valued as a nourishing food associated with strength, vitality and physical endurance, this remarkable root developed its reputation in one of the world's most demanding high-altitude environments.

Our Organic Maca Powder contains 100% organically grown Peruvian maca root, finely ground into a versatile powder with nothing else added.

A Different Choice for Your Morning

Maca is particularly interesting for active people and anyone looking for a caffeine-free addition to their daily routine.

Unlike coffee, matcha or guarana, maca naturally contains no caffeine. Instead of being another stimulant, it is a genuine food made from the whole maca root.

Nutritionally, maca is also more substantial than many powdered botanicals. It is high in fibre, providing 21.4 g per 100 g, and contains 14.3 g of plant protein per 100 g. Its naturally occurring carbohydrates make it especially easy to incorporate into breakfast, smoothies and active-day routines.

Naturally Sweet, Malty and Easy to Use

One of the reasons maca works so well as an everyday superfood is its flavour. It has a distinctive mild, naturally sweet and slightly caramel-like taste that pairs beautifully with cacao, banana, cinnamon, oats, nuts and plant-based milks.

Blend it into your morning smoothie, stir it into yoghurt or porridge, add it to a plant-based drink or combine it with cacao for a rich maca-cacao drink.

You only need 1 teaspoon (5 g) per day, so one 300 g pouch provides approximately 60 daily servings.

Why Choose This Maca?

This is maca in its simplest form: the organic Peruvian root, dried and ground into powder.

No complicated formula. No caffeine. No unnecessary ingredients. Just a traditional Andean food that is easy to make part of modern everyday life.

Choose it if you are looking for a superfood that fits naturally into breakfast, smoothies, active lifestyles and caffeine-free morning routines, while bringing with it the fascinating food tradition of the Peruvian Andes.

🌿Maca as an Adaptogen

Maca is a traditional Peruvian root commonly used as an adaptogenic food for energy, stamina and resilience. Unlike stimulating plants such as guarana, maca contains no caffeine.

It is particularly popular with people who want more physical and mental vitality, including athletes and those with demanding or active lifestyles.

Maca contains distinctive natural compounds called macamides, alongside polysaccharides and other naturally occurring plant constituents. Maca is discussed in modern herbal literature as a possible adaptogen, particularly in connection with physical performance, vitality and resilience.

🌿Energy, Endurance and Physical Performance

Maca has traditionally been used in the Andes to support strength, energy and endurance.

Today, it is widely used by athletes and active people looking for natural nutritional support for physical performance, stamina and recovery. Because it is caffeine-free, it can also be used by people who want vitality support without relying on stimulants.

🌿Libido and Sexual Vitality

Maca is especially well known for its traditional use as a natural aphrodisiac.

In both men and women, it has traditionally been used to support libido, sexual desire and sexual vitality. This is one of maca's best-known traditional uses and remains an important reason why people choose the root today.

🌿Male and Female Reproductive Health

Maca also has a long association with fertility and reproductive health.

Modern research has investigated maca in relation to male fertility, including sperm concentration and motility, as well as sexual function and desire. These areas of research reflect many of the reproductive uses for which maca has traditionally been valued.

🌿A Nourishing Whole Root

This product contains the whole maca root, dried and finely ground rather than concentrated into an extract.

Maca is naturally high in fibre and provides plant protein and carbohydrates. This makes it both a traditional botanical and a nourishing food that can easily be added to smoothies, yoghurt, porridge, cacao drinks or plant-based milk.

Usage tips

Take 1 teaspoon (5 g) per day. Maca powder has a naturally mild, slightly sweet and caramel-like flavour and can be mixed into drinks, yoghurt, porridge and both sweet and savoury recipes.

Try it in:

Morning smoothie: Blend 1 teaspoon maca with banana, plant-based milk, oats and a little cinnamon.

Maca cacao latte: Mix 1 teaspoon maca with 1 teaspoon cacao powder and warm oat or almond milk. Add cinnamon and honey if desired.

Greek yoghurt bowl: Stir 1 teaspoon maca into Greek yoghurt and top with berries, banana, nuts or seeds.

Breakfast porridge: Stir maca into oatmeal after cooking and serve with banana, almond butter and cinnamon.

Energy smoothie: Blend maca with banana, dates, cacao and your favourite milk for a naturally sweet, creamy drink.

Overnight oats: Mix maca into oats, yoghurt or plant-based milk and leave overnight. Add fruit and nuts before serving.

Smoothie bowl: Blend frozen banana and berries with yoghurt or plant-based milk, then add 1 teaspoon maca and your favourite toppings.

Savoury use: Add a small amount to soups, sauces, vegetable purées or homemade energy bites when you want to incorporate maca without making a sweet drink.

Tip: If you are new to maca, its distinctive malty flavour is particularly good with banana, cacao, cinnamon, vanilla, dates, nuts and oats.

A little history

🌿An Ancient Food of the Peruvian Andes

Maca (Lepidium meyenii) has been cultivated in the Peruvian Andes for centuries, particularly on the high plateaus where the harsh climate, strong winds, intense sunlight and cold temperatures make growing food challenging.

For Andean communities, maca was first and foremost a valuable food crop. The root could be dried for storage and prepared in porridges, drinks and other foods, providing nourishment in an environment where relatively few crops could thrive.

🌿Strength, Stamina and Fertility

Over generations, maca also developed an important place in traditional Andean practice. It became particularly associated with strength, stamina, vitality, sexual desire and fertility in both men and women.

Its reputation for reproductive vitality extended to livestock as well, and stories surrounding maca often describe its traditional use when fertility and successful breeding were particularly valued.

🌿From the Andes to the Rest of the World

For a long time, maca remained primarily an Andean food and botanical. International interest grew much later, as researchers and herbalists began investigating the traditional reputation of the root, including its use for physical performance, sexual wellbeing and reproductive health.

Today, maca has travelled far beyond Peru and is commonly found among superfoods and plants discussed in modern adaptogenic herbalism.

Yet the product remains remarkably close to its origins: a dried Andean root, ground into powder and incorporated into everyday food, much as maca has been consumed in Peru for generations.

FAQ

🌿 Is maca an adaptogen?
Yes. Maca is an adaptogen, meaning it helps the body adapt to physical and mental stress and supports resilience when demands are high. It is particularly valued for energy, stamina, endurance, physical performance and mental vitality, and is also well known for its connection with libido and sexual vitality.

🌿 Can maca be used for libido and sexual vitality?
Yes. This is one of maca's best-known traditional uses. In the Peruvian Andes, maca has a long history of use in connection with sexual desire, sexual vitality and reproductive wellbeing in both men and women.

🌿 Is maca only for men?
No. Maca has traditionally been used by both women and men. Its traditional reputation encompasses general vitality and endurance as well as libido and reproductive vitality.

🌿 When is the best time to take maca?
Maca can be taken at any time of day because it does not naturally contain caffeine. Many people prefer it at breakfast or earlier in the day, particularly when using it as part of an active morning routine.

🌿 How much maca should I use each day?
Use 1 teaspoon (5 g) per day. A 300 g pouch provides approximately 60 daily servings.

🌿 What is the easiest way to make maca taste good?
Maca's naturally sweet, slightly caramel-like flavour pairs especially well with banana, cacao, cinnamon, vanilla, dates, oats and nuts. Try it in a smoothie, Greek yoghurt, porridge or a warm maca-cacao drink.

🌿 Does the colour of maca make a difference?
Yes. Maca naturally occurs in several colours, and the different types have somewhat different phytochemical profiles and have traditionally been chosen for different purposes.

Yellow maca is the most common and is generally considered the all-round variety, traditionally used for energy, vitality, stamina and general wellbeing.

Red maca is particularly associated with female wellbeing and has also attracted research interest in relation to prostate health and bone health.

Black maca is traditionally associated with physical performance, stamina, mental performance and male reproductive health, and has been studied particularly in relation to sperm production and motility.

The colours are not separate maca species. They are different phenotypes of Lepidium meyenii, and a maca powder may contain more than one colour unless a particular type has been specifically selected.

This Organic Maca Powder is not documented by the producer as a colour-specific maca, so we do not describe it as yellow, red or black maca.

🌿 What are macamides, and why are they interesting?
Macamides are special natural compounds found in maca and are considered some of the plant's most characteristic substances. Scientists are particularly interested in them because they appear to interact with the body's endocannabinoid system, a natural communication system involved in regulating things such as stress, mood, appetite and energy balance. This may help researchers understand why maca has such a long-standing reputation for vitality and resilience, although research into macamides is still developing.
