Activated Charcoal Stick for Drinking Water

🌿A simple alternative to disposable water bottles

One activated charcoal stick can be used with 1 litre of drinking water at a time and remains active for approximately six months. For households that use filtered tap water instead of regularly buying bottled water, this makes the stick a simple way to reduce reliance on single-use bottles and disposable filter cartridges.

There is no electricity, plastic cartridge or complicated filtration system involved. Simply place the prepared stick in a carafe of potable tap water and allow 4 to 8 hours of contact time.

The charcoal does not need to go straight into the bin when its water-filtering life is over.

Because activated charcoal has a highly porous surface, the used stick can be repurposed as a natural deodoriser in places where unwanted smells tend to accumulate. Try placing it:

- in a shoe cupboard
- in the refrigerator
- inside a wardrobe
- in other small enclosed spaces where odours can build up

It can also be added to compost or placed in a flower pot at the end of its useful life.

🌿Can the charcoal stick be eaten?

No. This charcoal stick is specifically designed for water filtration and must not be ingested.

Activated charcoal also exists in food-grade forms intended for consumption, but these are different products. Do not break, grind or consume the water filter stick.

🌿Why choose French charcoal rather than Binchotan?

Binchotan is traditionally a Japanese charcoal, most famously associated with very hard charcoal made from oak. Charcoal water sticks inspired by this tradition have become popular as an alternative to conventional water-filter cartridges.

This version takes a more local European approach. It is made and packed in France using French PEFC-certified beech and oak from short supply chains, making it an interesting choice for anyone who want the simplicity of charcoal water filtration while preferring European sourcing and production.

How to Use:
For filtering drinking water to improve its purity and taste:

1. Boil the stick in 1 liter of water for approximately 10 minutes before first use to prevent bacterial contamination.

2. Place the stick in 1 liter of water for 4 to 8 hours. Store the container in the refrigerator or at room temperature.

3. Active for 6 months, it should be boiled again in water after 3 months of use.

After 6 months of use, recycle the filter stick in flower boxes as fertilizer or in closets to absorb odors.

Using charcoal to improve water is not a modern idea. Long before filter cartridges and countertop filtration systems, people discovered that carbonised wood could play a useful role in preparing and storing water.

Japan developed an especially strong tradition around charcoal. During the Edo period (1603–1867), charcoal was already part of everyday life, and historical accounts of Japanese water systems describe water being filtered through materials including charcoal and sand.

One particularly famous charcoal emerged from Kishū, present-day Wakayama Prefecture. In the late 17th century, a charcoal merchant and craftsman known as Bichū-ya Chōzaemon helped establish what became known as Binchōtan, a dense white charcoal traditionally made from Japanese oak. The name itself derives from Chōzaemon and tan, meaning charcoal.

Binchōtan became highly valued for its hardness, long-lasting qualities and porous structure. Historical sources from the Edo period also associate it with water purification, alongside its much better-known use as a cooking fuel.

Over time, the simple idea of placing charcoal directly into drinking water evolved into the charcoal water sticks we recognise today. Modern activated charcoal takes the principle further by creating an exceptionally porous material with a very large internal surface area, making it particularly suited to adsorption.

🌿 Can I leave the charcoal stick in the carafe when I refill it?
Yes. Once the water has had its recommended 4 to 8 hours of contact time, you can pour the water as needed and refill the carafe with fresh drinking water. The charcoal can remain in the carafe during its period of use.

🌿 Does the water need to be kept in the refrigerator?
No. The carafe can be kept either in the refrigerator or at room temperature, depending on how you prefer to drink your water.

🌿 What if small black particles appear in the water?
A little charcoal dust can occur, particularly when the stick is new. Charcoal is naturally brittle, so this does not necessarily mean that the stick is defective. The stick itself should not be ingested.

🌿 Can I use the stick in a larger carafe?
The recommended ratio is one stick per 1 litre of water. We recommend following this ratio rather than using one stick for a substantially larger volume.

🌿 Can I use it for infused water, tea or other drinks?
The stick is designed specifically for potable drinking water. We recommend using it only as intended rather than placing it directly in juice, tea, infused water or other beverages.

🌿 How do I remember when it is time to re-boil or replace it?
Write down the date when you first start using the stick. Re-boil it after approximately 3 months and retire it from drinking-water use after approximately 6 months. Adding both dates to your phone calendar when you first prepare the stick makes this particularly easy.
