Moving to a new country can be both exciting and challenging. This summer, my family and I decided to relocate to Spain. However, this move wasn't just about starting a new chapter in our lives; it was also about providing better care for my mother, who has Alzheimer's disease.

Why Spain?

Spain has always been a dream destination for us, with its vibrant culture, beautiful landscapes, and warm climate. But the main reason we chose Spain was because of the excellent healthcare system and support services available for individuals with Alzheimer's. In Alfaz del Pi, Norwegians can rest easy knowing that there are healthcare professionals who speak their native language. This is particularly important for individuals like my mom, who doesn't speak English or Spanish. Having healthcare providers who can communicate effectively in Norwegian ensures that she receives the best possible care.

Creating a Safe Haven

Upon our arrival, we made sure to set up a comfortable and safe environment for my mom. We decided to give her a separate apartment on the first floor of our house. This way, she has her own space while still being close to us for support and companionship.

A Holistic Approach

As someone who believes in the power of natural remedies, I wanted to provide my mom with the best care possible. Every morning and evening, I make sure to administer her prescribed medication, along with a range of natural remedies that have shown promising results in managing Alzheimer's symptoms.

Essential oils, such as lavender and rosemary, have been known to promote relaxation and improve cognitive function. Other essential oils like Petitgrain, Black pepper (digestive tonic), Grapefruit (atmospheric antiseptic), Lemon (laxative) Eucalyptus lemon (anti-inflammatory), Mandarin (relaxing), Orange, Palmarosa, Ravintsara (immune stimulant), Tea tree (anti-infectious), Pine (nerve tonic) for instance can be helpful in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease.

Hydrosols, which are floral waters, can help reduce anxiety and enhance mood. We use Neroli (Orange Blossom) before bedtime in her water when taking her pills. It's soothing.  Additionally, supplements like vitamins B6, B12, folate, zinc, selenium, magnesium, potassium, and omega-3 have been shown to support brain health.

A Spark of Hope

Since starting this holistic approach, we have noticed a remarkable change in my mom's well-being. Her overall mood has improved, and there is a renewed spark in her eyes. It's heartwarming to see her engage more in conversations and enjoy moments of clarity.

While Alzheimer's is a progressive disease with no known cure, I firmly believe that providing a supportive and nurturing environment, along with natural remedies, can make a significant difference in the quality of life for individuals with this condition.

Embracing the Journey

Our journey in Spain has not only been about providing care for my mom but also about embracing the new experiences and opportunities this country has to offer. We have discovered a supportive community of individuals who understand the challenges of caring for a loved one with Alzheimer's.

Every day brings new adventures, and we are grateful for the chance to create lasting memories with my mom. We cherish the moments of joy and find strength in the love and support we receive from our new friends and neighbors.

Supporting a loved one with Alzheimer's is not always easy, but with the right mindset, resources, and a supportive community, it is possible to navigate this journey with compassion and hope.

Caring is sharing

If you are someone taking care of a family member or other with Alzheimer's, I recommend reading "Alzheimer's, Aromatherapy, and the Sense of Smell" by Jean-Pierre Willem, M.D. This book has helped me so much in understanding this disease.
