Discover Cajeput essential oil sourced from a dedicated cooperative in Vietnam, active since 2004 and specializing in both organic and conventional essential oils. The cooperative works closely with eight local producers, supporting sustainable agriculture and contributing to the economic development of the region.

The Cajeput trees are cultivated on around 10 hectares in arid plains and harvested manually throughout the year. This careful, hands-on approach helps preserve both the quality of the plant material and traditional harvesting knowledge, while also increasing income opportunities for local communities.

Cajeput (Melaleuca cajuputi) is an evergreen tree native to Southeast Asia and Australia. It is a medium-sized tree that can grow up to 20 meters tall and thrives in wetlands such as marshes, coastal plains, and riverbanks. Harvesting typically begins once the trees reach maturity, usually between 4 and 6 years of age, depending on local growing conditions.

In traditional cultures, Cajeput has long been associated with protection and purification. Its strong, fresh, resinous aroma has been valued in rituals aimed at energetic cleansing and renewal, and the leaves have historically been used in ceremonial practices connected to wellbeing and balance.

This organic Cajeput essential oil reflects both its natural environment and the expertise of the people who cultivate and distil it, offering an authentic aromatic experience rooted in tradition and responsible sourcing.

A little history

Cajeput comes from Melaleuca cajuputi, a tree native to Southeast Asia and northern Australia, closely related to tea tree, niaouli, and eucalyptus. The name cajeput is derived from the Malay words “kayu putih”, meaning white wood - a reference to the tree’s pale, papery bark.

🌿Indigenous and traditional use

Long before distillation was introduced, Indigenous peoples of Australia and local communities across Indonesia, Malaysia, and Vietnam used cajeput leaves in everyday life. Fresh leaves were traditionally:

- crushed and inhaled for their strong, clearing aroma
- infused in hot water for aromatic washes
- applied externally for aches, fatigue, and insect discomfort

The bark was also practical: used for roofing, flooring, and shelter, valued for its durability and availability in wetland environments.

🌿Early distillation and trade

Cajeput oil was among the first essential oils traded internationally. By the 17th and 18th centuries, it was already known in Europe through Dutch and Portuguese trade routes in Indonesia. The oil appeared in European pharmacopoeias and herbals as Oleum Cajuputi.

An herbal dated 1876 describes cajeput oil as a household remedy, especially valued for its warming, stimulating character. At that time, it was commonly used externally for chest rubs, muscle discomfort, and fatigue - very much a “traveller’s oil” for tropical climates.

🌿Colonial medicine and household use

During the colonial period, cajeput oil became a staple in tropical medicine chests. It was carried by sailors, traders, and settlers as a multipurpose oil for:

- respiratory comfort
- muscular aches after long journeys
- insect-related discomfort

Its sharp, penetrating aroma made it especially popular in hot, humid regions where heaviness, stagnation, and insects were part of daily life.

🌿Modern aromatherapy

Today, cajeput is recognized as part of the Melaleuca family, sharing similarities with tea tree and niaouli, but with a more camphoraceous, eucalyptus-like profile. Modern aromatherapy continues to value it for:

- respiratory clarity
- physical revival after fatigue
- external protective applications

While its language has softened to meet modern regulations, the core personality of the oil has not changed: Cajeput remains an oil of movement, clarity, and fresh air.
