Elderflower (Sambucus nigra L.) infusion is a traditional herbal drink valued for its gentle action on the respiratory system and its natural support for the body’s elimination processes. Light, floral, and pleasant to drink, it has long been used during seasonal changes, periods of sluggish elimination, and when the body needs gentle support.

Elimination & Weight Balance

Elderflower is traditionally known for its diuretic and depurative properties. It supports the body’s natural elimination pathways by promoting urination and gentle sweating, helping the body release excess water and metabolic waste.

Because of this action, elderflower infusion is often used as part of a weight balance routine, alongside healthy dietary habits, especially when water retention is present.

Respiratory Comfort & Natural Defences

When consumed as an infusion, elderflower has a soothing effect on the throat, pharynx, and vocal cords. It is traditionally used during seasonal discomforts and to support respiratory comfort.

Elderflower is also appreciated for its role in supporting the immune system, helping the body’s natural defences stay strong.

Usage tips

Use 10–15 g of dried elderflower per day.

Standard daily infusion (gentle support):
Pour 150–250 ml of hot water (max. 80°C) over the herbs.
Cover and let infuse for 10–15 minutes.
Strain and drink warm.

Stronger, medicinal-style infusion:
For deeper elimination or immune support, allow the herbs to infuse for at least 1 hour or longer, covered.
Strain before drinking.

This infusion is typically enjoyed during the day.

A little history

Elderflower comes from the elder tree, Sambucus nigra, a plant with an unusually rich and almost mythic history in European herbalism. For centuries, it was considered a true “home pharmacy” tree - every part had a purpose, but the flowers held a special place.

In ancient Europe, elder was regarded as a protector plant. It was commonly planted near homes not just for practical use, but because people believed it safeguarded health and balance. In Nordic and Germanic traditions, the elder tree was associated with a guardian spirit, and it was customary to ask permission before harvesting its flowers. Behind the folklore was a deep respect for a plant that reliably supported the body through seasonal transitions.

Medically, elderflower was already well documented in Greek and Roman herbal texts, where it was used to promote sweating during fevers and to ease respiratory discomfort. This practice continued through the Middle Ages, when elderflower infusions became a staple remedy for colds, congestion, and “impurities of the blood” - an old way of describing what we now understand as elimination and detoxification processes.

In traditional European folk medicine, elderflower was especially valued in springtime cures. After winter, when heavy foods and inactivity were common, elderflower infusions were used to gently stimulate elimination through the kidneys and skin. This seasonal use is one reason elderflower later became associated with weight balance and water regulation.

By the 17th and 18th centuries, elderflower had earned a permanent place in official European herbals and pharmacopoeias. Herbalists praised it for its mild yet effective action - strong enough to support the body, gentle enough for regular use. Its pleasant aroma and taste also made it one of the most widely consumed medicinal infusions across Europe.

Today, elderflower remains a bridge between traditional wisdom and modern herbal practice. Its long-standing use for respiratory comfort, immune support, and natural elimination is not a trend, but the continuation of centuries of careful observation - proof that some plants earn their reputation the slow, reliable way: by working.
