More information

Black Soaps

Vegetable black soap, also called soft soap, is made from potash and a fat (vegetable oils such as linseed, sunflower, hemp, olive, etc.). With a soap concentration of about 10%, it usually has a paste-like consistency, while higher concentrations (40% or more) result in a thicker texture.

An excellent multi-purpose cleaner, black soap degreases, removes stains, cleans, and adds shine to almost all types of surfaces in the home and workshop. Its many other uses in the garden and for animal care make it an economical and essential product for natural living.

A Bit of History

Traces of the first soaps can be found in Asia Minor and around the Mediterranean basin over 3,000 years before Jesus Christ. The family of black soaps (or soft soaps) can be distinguished from solid soaps by their potash-based composition (rather than soda-based).

The earliest recognized black soaps described in literature were traditionally made from olive oil in the regions of southern Europe and North Africa. Over time, other oils have been added to these formulations - including linseed, hemp, and sunflower oils, which give rise to many variations of black soap.

All of these black soaps are guaranteed to be handmade and made from 100% oils.

Usage tips

Recipes

The many uses and recipes made with black soap are countless, but here are some of the most common. You’ll find it suitable for a variety of applications. Black soap cleans, degreases, nourishes, and shines most washable surfaces (floors, tiles, plastics, ceramics, marbles, wooden floors, slates, waxed concrete, linoleum, etc.).

Kitchen

Make your own dishwashing liquid
In a reused plastic bottle, pour:

1. 100 g of baking soda
2. 10 tablespoons of black soap
3. Fill with 500 ml of warm water.
4. Shake before each use.
For stubborn grease on dishes, pour a few drops of black soap directly onto a sponge and wash as usual.

Remove grease stains
Apply a small amount of black soap to greasy surfaces (hoods, ovens, worktops, hobs, etc.).
Leave to act for 5–10 minutes, then rinse with warm water.

Oven, fryer, and baking tray cleaning
For very greasy surfaces, mix 1 part black soap and 1 part Blanc de Meudon (Meudon white clay). Apply, leave for a few minutes, scrub, and rinse.

Floors and Tiles

Black soap excels in cleaning floors and tiles.
Directions:
Dilute 2–3 tablespoons of liquid black soap in 5 liters of hot water.
Mop, then rinse with warm water.

For wooden or tiled floors, use lukewarm water and avoid excessive rinsing to maintain the protective oil layer. Black soap nourishes and adds shine without leaving a greasy residue.
