A little history

🌿Gynostemma pentaphyllum – The Herb of Immortality

Jiaogulan is native to the mountainous regions of Southern China, as well as parts of Vietnam, Korea, and Japan. It grows wild in forested hillsides and has been traditionally consumed as a tea by rural communities for centuries.

Unlike many famous tonic herbs in Traditional Chinese Medicine, Jiaogulan was not reserved for emperors or elites. It was known as a “people’s herb” - gathered and used daily by farmers and villagers as a simple infusion to support stamina, endurance, and overall well-being.

🌿Discovery of Its Longevity Reputation

In the 1970s, Chinese researchers studying longevity patterns noticed that certain remote mountainous regions had unusually high numbers of centenarians. A common habit among these communities was the regular consumption of Jiaogulan tea.

This observation led scientists to investigate the plant more closely. They discovered that Jiaogulan contains a remarkable group of compounds called gypenosides, which are structurally very similar to the ginsenosides found in Panax ginseng.

Because of this similarity - and its apparent association with vitality and long life - Jiaogulan became known as:

“Xiān Cǎo” - The Herb of Immortality.

🌿From Folk Tea to Adaptogenic Research

After the 1970s, Jiaogulan began receiving more scientific attention. It was classified as an adaptogenic plant due to its ability to support the body’s resilience under physical and emotional stress.

Today, it is valued both in traditional Asian herbal practice and in modern phytotherapy for its role in:

- Supporting cardiovascular health
- Promoting metabolic balance
- Strengthening natural defenses
- Protecting against oxidative stress
- Enhancing overall vitality

🌿What makes Jiaogulan special historically is this:

It was not discovered in a royal palace.
It was discovered in mountain villages - through the lived experience of healthy, long-living people.
