A little history

🌲Origins & Native Lands

Giant Fir (Abies grandis) is native to the Pacific Northwest of North America, stretching from present-day British Columbia down through Washington, Oregon, and into northern California.

It thrives in cool, moist forests, often growing alongside Douglas Fir and Western Hemlock. Under the right conditions, it becomes truly giant - reaching 70–80 metres in height, with a straight trunk and soft, fragrant needles.

🌲Traditional Uses by Indigenous Peoples

Indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest knew Giant Fir well and used it as a practical healing tree, not a ceremonial one.

They traditionally used:

- Needles and resin in steam baths and inhalations for breathing comfort
- Resin as a protective dressing for minor cuts and skin issues
- Infusions of needles for general vitality during cold seasons

The emphasis was always lungs, strength, and survival through damp, cold climates.

🌲European Discovery & Forestry Use

When European explorers encountered Abies grandis in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, they immediately recognised its value - not for medicine first, but for timber.

It was introduced to Europe in the 1830s, especially in:
- France
- Germany
- The British Isles

In Europe, it adapted beautifully to mountainous and humid regions, which is why France later became a key producer of Giant Fir essential oil.

🌲Giant Fir in Aromatherapy History

Unlike Lavender or Frankincense, Giant Fir entered aromatherapy late.

Its essential oil use developed mainly in:
- French aromatherapy
- Forest-based wellness traditions
- Sanatorium and alpine air therapies

The oil was valued for:
- Air purification
- Breathing comfort
- Physical revitalisation

It was never positioned as emotional, hormonal, or digestive - its role was always physical, respiratory, and structural.

🌲Modern Artisanal Distillation

Today, Giant Fir essential oil is typically:
- Steam distilled from fresh needles
- Produced in small batches
- Harvested with forestry management practices

Distillers like Essenciagua focus on preserving the tree’s clean, green, resinous profile - a true expression of alpine and forest air.

🌲 The Spirit of Giant Fir

Giant Fir doesn’t whisper. It stands.

It represents:
- Endurance
- Vertical strength
- Breath and space
- Physical resilience

Not a mystic tree. Not a tender one. A pillar of the forest - steady, clarifying, and quietly powerful.
