A little history

Lemon has been travelling with humans for a very long time, quietly shaping food, medicine, and culture along the way 🍋

The lemon tree is believed to have originated in northeastern India, northern Myanmar, and China, where early citrus species naturally hybridised. Lemon itself is not a “pure” species but a natural cross, most likely between citron (Citrus medica) and bitter orange (Citrus × aurantium). This botanical accident turned out to be a brilliant one.

From Asia, lemons spread westward along ancient trade routes. By around 200 AD, they were already known in parts of the Middle East, where Arab farmers played a key role in cultivating and improving citrus trees. The Arabs were exceptional agricultural innovators, and they introduced lemons throughout North Africa, Sicily, and southern Spain between the 9th and 11th centuries. This is why lemons became so deeply rooted in Mediterranean culture.

Lemons were highly valued not only for their fresh, vibrant aroma and sharp taste, but also for their ability to preserve food and support hygiene in warm climates. Their acidic juice was used to clean, deodorise, and protect foods long before refrigeration existed.

During the Age of Exploration, lemons gained a new level of importance. European sailors carried them on long sea voyages after it was observed that citrus fruits helped prevent scurvy, a condition caused by vitamin C deficiency. This practical discovery made lemons essential cargo aboard ships, further spreading lemon trees to new continents.

Lemon essential oil emerged later, once distillation and cold-pressing techniques became more refined. The oil is obtained by cold pressing the peel, capturing the plant’s volatile aromatic compounds. Historically, lemon peel and its oil were used to freshen air, purify spaces, and uplift the spirit, making it a favourite in households and apothecaries.

Today, lemon essential oil still carries this long history within its scent: a symbol of clarity, freshness, and vitality, shaped by centuries of human use and botanical adaptation. It is one of those plants that feels both ancient and timeless - simple, bright, and deeply familiar.
