Fresh, vibrant, and full of life - Lime essential oil brings an instant feeling of clarity and energy. Distilled from the peel of hand-harvested limes in Sri Lanka, this oil carries a bright, tangy aroma with a subtle sweetness that awakens both body and mind.

The lime tree, smaller and more delicate than the lemon tree, thrives in tropical climates where it produces fragrant white blossoms and juicy green fruits throughout the year. Carefully picked by hand to preserve their quality, these fruits are transformed into a refreshing essential oil rich in natural vitality.

Historically, lime has played an important role in maintaining health. British sailors were once called “Limeys” because they relied on lime juice during long voyages to stay strong and resilient - a testament to the fruit’s powerful protective nature.

A little history

The History of Lime Essential Oil

Lime (Citrus aurantifolia) originates from Southeast Asia, particularly regions of India, Malaysia, and Indonesia. From these tropical areas, it spread through ancient trade routes, especially by Arab traders who introduced it to North Africa and the Mediterranean. There, lime quickly became valued for both its refreshing taste and its medicinal qualities.

During the age of exploration, lime traveled further with European sailors and merchants to the Caribbean, Central and South America, and parts of Africa. These regions provided ideal growing conditions, and lime became an important cultivated fruit across tropical climates.

One of the most significant moments in lime’s history came in the 18th century with the British Navy. Sailors on long sea voyages suffered from scurvy, a condition caused by a lack of vitamin C. To prevent this, they were given daily rations of lime juice. This practice was so effective that British sailors became known as “Limeys,” highlighting lime’s role as a protective and restorative fruit.

In traditional natural medicine, lime has long been used to support digestion, cleanse the body, and help the system resist infections. The peel of the fruit, rich in aromatic compounds, was especially valued for its stimulating and purifying properties.

Lime essential oil is extracted from the peel of the fruit. Traditionally, citrus oils were obtained through cold expression, preserving their bright and fresh aroma. Later, steam distillation methods were introduced, producing a softer oil that is less phototoxic.

Today, Lime essential oil is appreciated for its uplifting aroma, cleansing qualities, and versatility in both aromatherapy and natural home care. It continues to represent freshness, vitality, and natural support for everyday wellbeing.
