More information

Latin Name: Rosa damascena
Plant Part: Flower
Origin: Iran

The Damask Rose, often referred to as the queen of flowers, has been treasured since the Middle Ages for its medicinal and aromatic virtues. A member of the Rosaceae family, this beautiful rose - similar in form to the wild rose - thrives in sandy or rocky soils across Syria, Turkey, Bulgaria, Morocco, Russia, and Iran.

Essenciagua sources its Damask Rose essential oil from the Layzangan Distillery in Iran, where traditional, artisanal practices are still respected. Each flower is hand-picked at dawn, between 5 and 9 AM, during the peak blooming season from May to June. This early morning harvest is essential to preserve the delicate aromatic compounds before they are lost to the day’s heat. The petals are then steam-distilled within 24 hours to ensure optimal purity and fragrance retention.

With its deeply floral, balanced, and captivating scent, Damask Rose essential oil has been a symbol of beauty and perfection since antiquity. Due to its very low yield -thousands of petals are needed for just a few milliliters - this oil is precious and should be used sparingly. When blended with other essential oils, it enhances skincare routines, emotional balance, and aromatic rituals with elegance.

And not to be forgotten, Damask Rose Hydrosol is also a beloved skincare ally, especially for the face, offering gentle toning and soothing benefits.

A little history

🌹 The History of Damask Rose Essential Oil
The Damask Rose (Rosa damascena) has enchanted civilizations for over a thousand years. Often called the queen of flowers, this exquisite rose is not only admired for its beauty and fragrance, but also revered for its therapeutic and symbolic power.

The origins of the Damask Rose trace back to ancient Persia - modern-day Iran - where it was first cultivated for its medicinal and aromatic virtues. According to legend, the Damask Rose was brought to Europe during the Crusades, most likely by returning knights in the 13th century. From there, it flourished in countries like Syria, Turkey, and later Bulgaria and Morocco, where it became deeply embedded in local culture and herbal medicine traditions.

Throughout history, the Damask Rose was associated with love, purity, and healing. It was used in sacred rituals, religious ceremonies, and royal beauty routines - from Cleopatra's rose-filled baths to mediaeval apothecaries preparing rose-based remedies for inflammation, skin problems, and heartache.

But it wasn’t until the early Islamic Golden Age that the steam-distillation of rose petals was perfected. Pioneers in Arab-Persian medicine, such as Avicenna, helped refine the methods that would later be used to produce rose water and essential oil - both of which gained immense popularity across the Middle East and Europe.

Due to its extremely low yield - thousands of petals are needed for just one milliliter of oil - Damask Rose Essential Oil became one of the rarest and most precious oils in the world. It has remained a symbol of luxury, femininity, and emotional depth ever since.

Today, Damask Rose Essential Oil is still distilled using ancestral methods, often in the early morning hours when the flowers’ aromatic molecules are most concentrated. Whether used in perfumery, skincare, or aromatherapy, this ancient oil continues to offer a profound connection to nature, history, and timeless beauty.
