More information

Benefits of Using Cacao Powder

Organic cacao powder is more than a flavourful ingredient. In its pure, unsweetened form, it offers a wide range of natural plant compounds that support everyday vitality and overall well-being.

Naturally Rich in Antioxidants

Cacao is known for its high content of polyphenols, powerful plant antioxidants that help protect the body from everyday oxidative stress. These compounds are also what give cacao its deep, complex flavour.

Supports a Sense of Energy and Focus

Pure cacao contains natural theobromine, a gentle plant alkaloid that offers a smoother, more sustained energy lift than caffeine. Many people enjoy cacao for its ability to help them feel alert, centred, and more focused—without the sharp peaks associated with coffee.

Contains Essential Minerals

Cacao naturally provides minerals linked to daily vitality, including magnesium, iron, and potassium. Magnesium, in particular, is valued for supporting relaxation, muscle comfort, and a balanced mood - making cacao a favourite in both nourishing recipes and comforting warm drinks.

Pleasant Mood Support

Cacao contains natural compounds such as tryptophan precursors and anandamide-like molecules, often associated with a sense of well-being and emotional balance. This is one reason many people find a warm cacao drink deeply comforting after a long day.

Versatile for Healthy Recipes

Because it is naturally unsweetened, cacao powder gives you full control of sweetness and allows you to create healthier alternatives to traditional cocoa-based products. Its intense flavour works beautifully in smoothies, plant-milk drinks, energy bites, oat bowls, Greek yoghurt, baked goods, and raw desserts.

Usage tips

2 tablespoons (20 g) per day, mixed into a hot drink or incorporated into your recipes.

How to Use Organic Cacao Powder

You can enjoy up to 2 tablespoons of cacao powder per day, spread throughout drinks, breakfasts, or recipes. Its rich, aromatic flavour blends beautifully into both sweet and nourishing creations.

In Hot Drinks

Stir 1 tablespoon of cacao powder into warm plant milk or water. Mix well, then sweeten if desired. Add a touch of cinnamon or vanilla for a comforting, cosy drink.

In Smoothies

Blend 1 tablespoon of cacao with bananas, berries, nut butter, oats, or plant yoghurt to create a rich, chocolate-style smoothie. It brings depth, aroma, and a satisfying natural flavour.

In Breakfast Bowls

Sprinkle 1 tablespoon over porridge, chia pudding, overnight oats, or yoghurt bowls. It adds a chocolate note and enhances the feeling of nourishment.

In Baking

Add cacao powder directly to cakes, muffins, cookies, brownies, or raw desserts. Since it’s unsweetened, you maintain full control over sweetness and flavour intensity.

For Homemade Healthy Treats

Use 1–2 tablespoons when making energy balls, raw bars, or cacao spreads. Mix with dates, nuts, seeds, or coconut for simple, wholesome snacks.

As a Topping

Dust cacao over whipped cream alternatives, desserts, fruit bowls, or warmed plant milk for a finishing touch that enhances aroma and richness.

A little history

The History of Cacao – A Sacred Bean With Ancient Roots

The use of cacao goes back thousands of years. Long before it became the chocolate we know today, it was considered a sacred plant, a symbol of vitality, and a gift from the gods.

Origins in Mesoamerica

Cacao was first cultivated by the Olmecs, one of the oldest civilizations of Central America, more than 3,500 years ago. They were likely the first to crush the beans and mix them into a drink used in rituals and daily life.

After the Olmecs, the Maya and later the Aztecs elevated cacao to a central place in their culture. For them, it was more than a food - it was a source of energy, a ceremonial drink, and a symbol of life force.

“Food of the Gods”

The scientific name of the cacao tree, Theobroma cacao, literally means food of the gods.
This name reflects the deep reverence ancient cultures held for cacao. They believed it connected the physical world with the spiritual one.

A Sacred, Bitter Drink

The original cacao drink was not sweet. It was a frothy, bitter beverage called xocolatl, often mixed with chilies, vanilla, honey, or spices.
It was consumed by:

– priests during ceremonies
– warriors for strength
– nobility during important gatherings
– healers for spiritual and physical balance

In many ways, it was considered both nourishing and powerful.

A Symbol of Wealth and Exchange

The Aztecs valued cacao beans so highly that they used them as currency.
A handful of beans could buy food, clothing, or household items.
Cacao was so precious that counterfeit beans even existed - filled with mud to imitate the real ones.

Arrival in Europe

Cacao entered Europe in the 16th century through Spanish explorers.
At first, it remained a luxury reserved for nobility. The drink slowly transformed as Europeans began adding sugar, vanilla, and milk.

This marked the birth of what would eventually become modern chocolate.

Back to the Roots: Pure Cacao Today

Interest in pure, unsweetened, minimally processed cacao has grown again, inspired by its ancient uses. People appreciate it for:

– natural vitality
– rich flavour
– ritual and comfort
– grounded, everyday nourishment

Cacao has moved from sacred ceremonies to kitchens around the world, yet it still carries its ancient symbolism of warmth, energy, and connection.
