Nettle is not just a “joint herb” - it is a deeply nourishing plant tonic for the whole body.

More information

Suitable for Children?

Stinging nettle leaf infusion is traditionally considered a gentle, nourishing herb and may be used for children in appropriate amounts. Unlike strong medicinal plants, nettle is primarily a mineral-rich tonic that supports growth, vitality, and overall resilience.

It has long been used to support children during periods of rapid growth, low energy, seasonal challenges, and after illness when rebuilding strength is important.

For children, always prepare a mild infusion:

Use 1 tablespoon of dried nettle per 250 ml hot water.
Let steep at least 30 minutes, then strain.

Suggested amounts:

1–3 years: 1–2 teaspoons of diluted infusion

4–7 years: up to 50 ml daily

8–12 years: up to 100 ml daily

Teenagers: may take adult amounts if needed

The infusion can be served lukewarm and, if desired, mixed with a little apple juice or elderberry syrup for a milder taste.

For small children, avoid very strong long-steeped mineral infusions unless specifically needed. A gentle preparation is usually sufficient.

As with all herbs, observe the child individually and adjust amounts accordingly.

Usage tips

To obtain the full benefit of nettle - especially its rich mineral content - allow sufficient steeping time. Minerals require several hours to properly extract from the leaves.

🌿 Daily Nourishing Infusion
(Minimum 30 minutes)

Maximum daily amount:
Up to 6 tablespoons per day (approx. 9–15 g total).

- Strain before drinking

You may drink up to 3 cups daily.

▸ For a Teapot (800 ml)

- Cover
- Let steep minimum 30 minutes, the longer the better.

🌿 Medicinal / Deep Mineral Infusion
(Optimal Mineral Extraction)

Nettle leaves release their minerals slowly. For full mineral extraction, allow 4–6 hours or overnight.

▸ 1 Cup (200 ml)

- Use up to 3 tablespoons (approx. 9 g)
- Pour 200 ml hot water (max 80°C) over the herbs
- Cover
- Let steep 4–6 hours or overnight
- Strain

Divide into 2–3 portions during the day

▸ Large Batch (1 Liter – Recommended Method)

- Use 4–5 tablespoons per liter (approx. 14–18 g)
- Pour hot water over the herbs
- Cover
- Let steep 4–12 hours or overnight
- Strain

Store in the refrigerator and use within 24–48 hours.

🌿 Refilling the Herbs

Nettle aerial parts may be refilled with hot water several times during the same day.

- Continue refilling until the infusion becomes noticeably pale
- Each extraction will be milder but still mineral-rich

You may:
Leave the herbs in the pot and continue refilling throughout the day

Or prepare a long infusion overnight and strain in the morning

🌿 After Use – Return It to Nature

- Do not throw the plant material in the trash.
- After extraction, the leaves can be:
- Added to your compost
- Spread around plants in the garden as natural mineral matter
- Used to enrich soil in pots or vegetable beds

In this way, the minerals continue their cycle - from soil, to plant, to you, and back to the earth.

A little history

Stinging nettle (Urtica dioica) is one of Europe’s oldest and most respected medicinal plants. Long before it was known as a herbal infusion, it was a survival plant - used as food, medicine, fiber, and protection.

Archaeological discoveries show that nettle fibers were used for textiles more than 5,000 years ago. In Northern Europe during the Bronze Age, nettle was processed into strong fabric. Before cotton became widely available, nettle was an important textile plant, valued for its durability and strength.

In ancient Greece, Hippocrates described nettle in his writings, and the Romans used it to stimulate circulation and relieve joint stiffness. Roman soldiers are said to have rubbed fresh nettles onto the skin to warm the body and ease rheumatic discomfort - a practice that continued in parts of Europe for centuries.

During the Middle Ages, nettle was cultivated in monastery gardens and widely used in European folk medicine. It was considered a cleansing and strengthening herb, often used in spring to restore vitality after the long winter months. Nettle was traditionally taken to support joint health, circulation, and overall resilience.

Across Scandinavia and other parts of Northern Europe, nettle soup became a seasonal tradition - a nourishing, mineral-rich dish prepared in early spring to rebuild strength and energy. In times of war and food shortages, nettle again proved its value. During both World Wars, it was used as a textile substitute and as a nutritious wild food.

Beyond its practical uses, nettle has carried symbolic meaning in European folklore. It has been associated with endurance, protection, and vitality. The plant often grows in mineral-rich soil, and herbalists have long observed that where nettle thrives, the land is fertile and alive.

For centuries, nettle has been regarded as a foundational herb - one that strengthens rather than overstimulates, rebuilds rather than masks symptoms, and nourishes deeply over time. It remains one of the most valued mineral-rich plants in traditional European herbal practice.
