More information

Latin Name: Matricaria Recutita
Plant Part: Flower
Origin: France

Originally native to Eastern Europe and the Middle East, Matricaria, commonly known as German Chamomile, is now found across much of Europe. It thrives naturally in open, uncultivated fields and even on abandoned land. Whether growing wild or cultivated, chamomile is traditionally harvested in summer when the blossoms are fully open.

Its name has beautiful roots: from the Greek chamos (“ground”) and melos (“apple”), referring to the plant’s low growth and its gentle, apple-like fragrance. The genus name Matricaria comes from the Latin matrix (“womb” or “mother”) and the suffix -aria, reflecting its long association with care and comfort.

And yes - it’s famously the plant of golden hair, once cherished in natural hair care for enhancing soft, sunlit tones.

🌿What is the difference between German Chamomile and Roman Chamomile?

Although both plants display charming white petals with yellow centers, they can be told apart by the shape of that center. Roman Chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile) has a rounded, pom-pom-like center, while German Chamomile (Matricaria recutita) features a more cone-shaped center that stands slightly taller above the petals.

A little history

German Chamomile has one of the most storied lineages in the herbal world, stretching back thousands of years. Its use is woven through the folk medicine, mythology, and daily life of several ancient cultures.

The earliest written references come from ancient Egypt, where chamomile was dedicated to the sun god Ra and valued for its ability to “cool the heat.” It was used in embalming mixtures, perfumes, and healing ointments. Egyptian women also employed chamomile-infused oils to enhance their complexion and hair.

The Greeks and Romans followed suit. Greek physicians like Hippocrates and Dioscorides praised its use for fevers and digestive discomforts, and the Romans valued it for calming both the stomach and the spirit. The word chamomile itself comes from the Greek chamaimēlon - chamos meaning “on the ground” and mēlon meaning “apple,” referring to the plant’s low growth and sweet apple scent.

During the Middle Ages, German Chamomile became a cornerstone of European folk medicine. It was one of the so-called “Nine Sacred Herbs” of the Anglo-Saxons, a list of plants believed to protect against disease and evil spirits. Monks grew it in monastery gardens, both as a healing herb and as a strewing plant to freshen rooms and repel insects.

By the 18th and 19th centuries, German Chamomile had become a staple of pharmacopoeias across Europe. Apothecaries used its dried flowers for teas and poultices, while early distillers began producing essential oil for soothing ointments and balms.

Today, it remains a symbol of gentle strength - a plant that calms without dulling, heals without harshness, and carries the same warm, apple-like fragrance that once scented ancient temples and medieval herb gardens alike.
