More information

Latin Name: Achillea Millefolium
Plant part: Flowering Summit
Origin: France

Its name comes from the legendary hero Achilles, who, according to Greek mythology, used this perennial plant to heal the wounds of his warriors. The name millefolium - meaning “a thousand leaves” - refers to its finely divided foliage, typical of the Asteraceae family, which also includes its Mediterranean relative, the Italian Helichrysum.

The white yarrow flowers, easily spotted along meadows and embankments, are harvested and distilled at the end of their bloom in August. Yarrow is a plant celebrated for its many beneficial properties.

Its distillation is always an act of patience and precision, as the yield is very low - comparable to that of the rose. Though the essential oil is rare, the hydrosol is equally valuable. Both contain a rich aromatic composition, featuring monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes, camphor, and cineole.

Blends well with

Yarrow Essential Oil blends beautifully with these oils because it sits at a fascinating intersection - herbaceous yet slightly sweet, earthy yet floral. Its chemistry (rich in azulene, sesquiterpenes, and cineole) gives it strong anti-inflammatory, circulatory, and regenerative powers, which harmonize with oils that share similar or complementary properties. Here’s why each pairing works so well:

Cedarwood Atlas – Deep, grounding, and strengthening; complements Yarrow’s balancing nature and enhances its circulatory and lymphatic support.

Chamomile German & Chamomile Roman – Both highly soothing and anti-inflammatory; together, they amplify Yarrow’s calming and skin-regenerating effects - a dream team for sensitive or irritated skin.

Cypress – Tones and stimulates circulation, making it ideal alongside Yarrow for varicose veins, swelling, and heavy legs.

Geranium – Hormone-balancing and skin-regenerating; enhances Yarrow’s restorative and harmonising effects on both body and emotions.

Ho Wood (Cinnamomum camphora ct. linalool) – Soft, floral-woody and deeply relaxing; pairs well for calming blends targeting tension, sleep, or anxiety.

Juniper Berry – Detoxifying and purifying; boosts Yarrow’s circulatory and cleansing actions, especially for fluid retention and joint discomfort.

Lavender – Gentle, versatile, and restorative; the floral-herbal harmony soothes both skin and nervous system, creating an excellent all-round healing blend.

Marjoram Sweet – Muscle-relaxing and warming; reinforces Yarrow’s antispasmodic and comforting properties, perfect for cramps or muscle tension.

Niaouli – Refreshing and purifying; enhances Yarrow’s respiratory and immune support while keeping the blend bright and uplifting.

Orange Sweet – Adds a cheerful, soft citrus note that balances Yarrow’s intensity and brings emotional warmth to the blend.

Palmarosa – Moisturising and regenerating for the skin; complements Yarrow’s cicatrizant (healing) action in skincare and scar blends.

Rosemary – Stimulating and revitalising; supports circulation and focus while balancing Yarrow’s calm - ideal for tired muscles or mental fatigue.

Rosa damascena (Rose) – Deeply harmonising and emotionally nurturing; amplifies Yarrow’s balancing and restorative essence for mature or sensitive skin.

Tea Tree – Cleansing and protective; reinforces Yarrow’s antiseptic and healing qualities for skin repair and wound care.

Yarrow blends well with floral oils for calm, woods for grounding, and herbs or resins for balance and strength - creating complex, therapeutic synergies that nourish both body and mind.

A little history

Yarrow's story begins in ancient Greece, where the legendary warrior Achilles used the plant to treat his soldiers’ battle wounds - hence the name Achillea. Greek texts refer to it as “the soldier’s herb” or “herba militaris.” The myth says Achilles learned of its powers from the centaur Chiron, who taught him to use Yarrow to stop bleeding and promote healing.

Archaeological findings confirm its long use: Neanderthal burial sites in Iraq contained yarrow pollen, suggesting it was valued for healing even 60,000 years ago. In traditional Chinese medicine, yarrow stalks were used to cast I Ching divinations - it was seen as a symbol of balance between yin and yang, life and death.

Across Europe, it gained a reputation as a protector and purifier. In medieval times, people hung it above doorways or carried it to ward off evil spirits and disease. Farmers used it in animal care, and folk healers made infusions to stop bleeding, ease fevers, and calm digestion.

Yarrow was also known as “nosebleed plant” because its feathery leaves could be pressed into cuts to staunch bleeding. In the 17th and 18th centuries, herbalists like Nicholas Culpeper described it as a tonic for “wounds of all kinds” and “fluxes of blood,” praising its versatility for both inner and outer ailments.

Today, its reputation still mirrors that ancient wisdom: a healer of wounds, a soother of inflammation, and a harmoniser of the body. From battlefield remedy to modern aromatherapy, Yarrow has kept its role as one of nature’s quiet but powerful healers.

It’s a plant with both mythic roots and scientific substance - a bridge between legend and lab.
