Made in France

  • Warm, earthy and distinctly spicy, Turmeric Organic Essential Oil is distilled from the rhizomes of Curcuma longa, the golden tropical plant often known as turmeric or Indian saffron.

The rhizomes used for this essential oil come from Madagascar. Turmeric belongs to the ginger family and has been valued for centuries throughout Asia in culinary traditions, Ayurveda and botanical preparations.

Turmeric Essential Oil captures the volatile aromatic fraction of the rhizome, giving it a very different composition and character from turmeric powder or curcumin extracts. Its deep, earthy fragrance has warm, woody and gently peppery nuances.

In aromatherapy, Turmeric Essential Oil is particularly valued in preparations for digestive comfort and muscles and joints. It can be diluted in a carrier oil for abdominal massage or incorporated into massage blends for tired, uncomfortable or overworked muscles and joints, including after physical activity.

Its warm aromatic character also makes it an interesting choice for comforting and grounding diffuser blends. As a food-grade essential oil, it can also be used in very small quantities to bring the distinctive warm, earthy character of turmeric to culinary preparations.

Traditional Use

Turmeric has a long history of use throughout South and Southeast Asia, both as a culinary spice and within traditional wellness systems. In Ayurveda, preparations made from the turmeric rhizome have traditionally been associated with digestion, liver function, the skin and inflammatory conditions.

In aromatherapy, Turmeric Rhizome Essential Oil has traditionally been used particularly for digestive and musculoskeletal preparations. Aromatherapy literature describes its use for indigestion, dyspepsia, stomach cramps and intestinal spasms, as well as general aches and pains, rheumatism and rheumatoid arthritis.

For digestive comfort, the diluted essential oil may be incorporated into an abdominal massage oil. For muscles and joints, it can be included in local massage preparations and combined with complementary essential oils according to the intended use.

Turmeric Essential Oil contains the volatile aromatic constituents of the rhizome and should not be confused with turmeric powder or curcumin-rich extracts. Curcumin belongs primarily to the non-volatile fraction of turmeric, while the essential oil has its own distinctive aromatic and chemical profile.

A little history

Turmeric has been part of Asian culture for thousands of years. Its distinctive yellow-orange rhizome became important not only as a spice, but also in traditional medicine, textile colouring, religious ceremonies and everyday life.

The plant is sometimes called Indian saffron, a reference to the intense golden colour it brings to food and preparations. Long before turmeric became internationally associated with wellness, it was already an important ingredient in the cuisines of South and Southeast Asia.

Turmeric belongs to the same botanical family as ginger, Zingiberaceae. The useful part lies underground: a thick, branching rhizome with an intensely coloured interior and characteristic earthy fragrance.

Turmeric became one of the characteristic ingredients in curry mixtures, contributing to their familiar golden colour and warm aromatic character.

Although turmeric is strongly associated with India today, its history extends throughout tropical Asia. Through cultivation and trade it travelled widely and is now grown in tropical regions around the world, including Madagascar, where the rhizomes used for this essential oil originate.
