Sea Buckthorn Organic Bud Extract is a restorative gemmotherapy preparation traditionally valued for vitality, resilience and natural immune support. It is particularly suited to periods of physical fatigue, convalescence, seasonal changes and reduced resistance during the colder months.

Sea buckthorn is an exceptionally adaptable plant that thrives in extreme cold, high altitudes and dry environments. In gemmotherapy, this resilience is reflected in its traditional use as a general tonic that helps the body adapt during demanding periods.

The bud extract is also traditionally used during perimenopause and menopause to support vaginal and mucosal comfort, healthy circulation and tissue vitality during hormonal changes.

Herbiolys prepares this extract from freshly harvested certified organic Sea Buckthorn buds. The buds are never frozen and are placed into maceration directly at the harvesting site in France.

Traditional gemmotherapy applications

Sea Buckthorn bud macerate is considered a powerful general tonic and one of the principal antiviral preparations in traditional gemmotherapy. It is associated with strength, resilience and the ability to adapt during seasonal changes, periods of fatigue and physically demanding conditions.

It is traditionally used to support:

- Physical fatigue, exhaustion and overwork
- Recovery and convalescence
- Natural immune defences
- Winter resilience and seasonal adaptation
- Recurrent respiratory concerns
- Healthy circulation
- Gastric mucosal comfort
- Skin repair and regeneration
- Healthy vision and dry eye comfort

Usage tips

Take 15 drops in the morning and at midday, preferably 15 to 60 minutes before meals or 1½ to 2 hours after meals.

The drops may be taken directly on the tongue or diluted in a small amount of water.

Use for three weeks, followed by a one-week break before repeating if required.

For seasonal support, 15 drops may traditionally be taken every morning from October and continued throughout winter, with a one-week break after every three weeks.

At the beginning of an acute viral or flu-like illness, traditional gemmotherapy practice recommends five drops every hour initially, gradually increasing the interval between doses as symptoms improve.

For herpes, one drop may traditionally be applied locally three times daily.

🌿Perimenopause and menopause

Sea Buckthorn Bud Extract is also traditionally recommended during perimenopause and menopause, particularly when hormonal changes are accompanied by vaginal dryness, reduced mucosal comfort or circulatory concerns.

Declining oestrogen can affect the moisture, sensitivity and resilience of the vaginal and genital mucosa. Sea Buckthorn is traditionally used to support tissue nourishment, mucosal comfort, healthy circulation and regeneration during this transition.

It pairs particularly well with White Alder Bud Extract when vaginal dryness occurs alongside circulatory concerns.

🌿Immune and seasonal support

Sea Buckthorn is traditionally taken from the beginning of autumn to strengthen the body’s natural defences and improve resistance during winter.

It is also used during acute viral and flu-like illnesses and for people who are prone to recurrent respiratory infections. For broader respiratory support, it is traditionally combined with Blackcurrant or Black Alder Bud Extract.

People who struggle with cold weather, reduced daylight or seasonal low mood may traditionally combine Sea Buckthorn with Blackcurrant Bud Extract.

🌿Vitality and recovery

As an adaptogenic and restorative bud macerate, Sea Buckthorn is traditionally recommended for:

Older adults
People recovering after illness
Fatigue and exhaustion
Overwork
Reduced vitality
Demineralisation
Difficulty adapting to seasonal changes

For anaemia and weakness, it is traditionally combined with Oak, Hazel or Tamarisk bud extracts.

🌿Gastric mucosal support

Sea Buckthorn Bud Extract is traditionally used to support regeneration and protection of the gastric mucosa. It may help soothe gastric irritation and stomach burning while supporting the stomach lining’s natural protective function.

🌿Lipid metabolism and cardiovascular wellness

Traditional gemmotherapy literature associates Sea Buckthorn with healthy lipid metabolism. It is described as helping to maintain balanced LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol and triglyceride levels while protecting against oxidative damage.

Its traditional circulatory and tissue-supportive applications also make it relevant during perimenopause and menopause.

🌿Eyes and skin

Sea Buckthorn is traditionally associated with vitamins A, C and E and is valued for its antioxidant and healthy ageing properties.

It is traditionally used to:

Support healthy vision
Help protect against the effects of sun exposure
Support dry eye comfort
Promote skin repair
Support wound healing and skin regeneration

For vision support, it is traditionally combined with Bilberry. For dry eye discomfort, it may be combined with Cedar of Lebanon Bud Extract.

Quality

At Herbiolys, quality begins in nature and is preserved at every stage of production.

Carefully Selected, Fully Traceable Herbs
All plants are harvested by accredited producer-pickers, ensuring complete traceability from the field to the finished product. This direct relationship with the harvesters guarantees transparency, integrity, and respect for the plant.

Organic Plants from Protected Natural Areas
The organic herbs are primarily sourced from preserved natural environments, far from pollution and environmental contamination. For protected or rarer species, certified organic cultivation is used to safeguard biodiversity.

Ethical and Responsible Harvesting
Harvesting is carried out in accordance with the SIMPLES Syndicate Charter and organic farming standards. Great care is taken to protect plant populations and maintain ecological balance at each harvesting site. Respect for nature is not an option - it is a principle.

Immediate On-Site Maceration
To preserve the full vitality of the plant, maceration takes place immediately at the harvest location. This prevents oxidation and enzyme degradation while protecting chlorophyll and the plant’s naturally occurring active compounds. The result is a vibrant extract that reflects both the essence of the plant and the energy of its natural habitat.

Glass Storage from Start to Finish
All macerations are prepared and stored exclusively in glass demijohns and bottles from harvest through to the finished product. This ensures purity and stability without unwanted interactions.

Hand-Dynamized Extracts
During the final packaging stage, each extract is dynamized by hand. This traditional process enhances dispersion and assimilation of the plant’s active compounds while supporting the energetic quality of the preparation.

A Rigorous, Artisan Protocol
From harvesting to labeling, every step is carried out with precision and care. This strict production protocol ensures exceptional quality, purity, and effectiveness in every bottle.

A little history

Sea buckthorn is a resilient, thorny shrub native to Europe and Asia. It thrives in demanding environments, including high altitudes, exposed coastlines, poor soils, extreme cold and arid landscapes.

Its botanical name, Hippophae, comes from the Greek words hippos, meaning horse, and phaos, meaning shining. Historical accounts describe its leaves and young branches being fed to horses to improve their condition and give their coats a healthy appearance.

Although Sea Buckthorn is best known for its bright orange berries, gemmotherapy uses the fresh developing buds. These embryonic tissues are harvested during an active stage of growth and contain the regenerative potential of the plant.

The shrub’s ability to thrive under extreme conditions is reflected in its traditional use as a tonic for resilience, adaptation and recovery.
