Schisandra Extract – Schisandra chinensis
Hydroalcoholic extract · The Five-Flavor Berry

Schisandra is one of the great tonic plants of East Asian herbal traditions, valued for centuries for its ability to support vitality, clarity, and resilience. Known in Traditional Chinese Medicine as Wǔ Wèi Zi“the fruit of five flavors” – this remarkable berry brings together sweet, sour, bitter, salty, and pungent qualities in a single plant.

Our Schisandra hydroalcoholic extract is made from carefully selected dried berries, traditionally cultivated in China and slowly extracted to preserve the full spectrum of active plant compounds. This method captures both water- and alcohol-soluble constituents, resulting in a concentrated, high-quality extract.

Traditionally used as an adaptogen, Schisandra helps the body respond to physical and emotional stress while supporting mental focus, endurance, and overall energy. It is also well known for its supportive role in liver function, natural detoxification processes, and cellular protection.

More information

Schisandra chinensis is a climbing plant native to East Asia, including China, Siberia, Korea, and Japan. Although technically a berry rather than an herb, it has been used almost exclusively for medicinal purposes for over 2,000 years.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, Schisandra is known as Wǔ Wèi Zi (五味子), meaning “the fruit of five flavors”. Its berries uniquely combine sweet, sour, bitter, salty, and pungent tastes, reflecting its broad and harmonising nature.

Traditionally, Schisandra has been used as a tonic to support vitality, mental clarity, endurance, and resistance to stress. It is also highly valued in Russian and Korean herbal traditions, where it has been used to support physical performance and long-term resilience.

Because of its intense and complex flavour, the berries are usually dried and prepared as extracts rather than eaten fresh.

A little history

Schisandra (Schisandra chinensis) has been used for over 2,000 years in Traditional Chinese Medicine, where it is known as Wǔ Wèi Zi (五味子) - “the fruit of five flavors”. Its unique taste profile, combining sweet, sour, bitter, salty, and pungent qualities, reflects its broad and harmonising role within traditional herbal systems.

In classical Chinese texts, Schisandra was valued as a tonic for vitality, endurance, and mental clarity, and was traditionally associated with strengthening resilience to physical and emotional strain. It was also used to support longevity and preserve vital energy over time.

Beyond China, Schisandra has a long history of use in Siberian and Russian herbal traditions, where it was taken by hunters, soldiers, and athletes to support stamina, focus, and resistance to fatigue in harsh conditions. It is also part of traditional herbal practice in Korea and Japan, where the berries have been used in tonics and fermented preparations.

Historically, Schisandra berries were harvested in late summer, then dried or preserved to stabilise their active compounds. Due to their intense flavour, they were rarely consumed as food and instead prepared as medicinal extracts or decoctions.

Today, Schisandra continues to be recognised as a classic adaptogenic plant, bridging ancient herbal wisdom with modern research into stress adaptation, liver support, and cellular protection.
