A traditional Ayurvedic adaptogen for demanding days, relaxation and everyday resilience

When life feels busy and demanding, ashwagandha is one of the traditional botanicals worth discovering. Used for centuries in Ayurveda, Withania somnifera is today one of the world's best-known adaptogenic plants, particularly popular among people looking for natural ways to support themselves through periods of mental and physical demand while making relaxation and recovery part of their daily routine.

Our Organic Ashwagandha Powder is made from 100% organically grown ashwagandha root from India. Rather than a concentrated extract, you receive the finely powdered whole root, giving you a simple and traditional way to incorporate this celebrated Ayurvedic plant into your everyday routine.

Why choose ashwagandha?

Ashwagandha has an unusual place among traditional botanicals because it is not simply thought of as an energising plant or a relaxing plant. In Ayurveda, it belongs to a broader tradition of restorative and strengthening herbs, traditionally chosen during periods when the body and mind are under greater demand.

This makes it particularly interesting if you are exploring botanicals for:

  • demanding or stressful periods
  • busy days requiring sustained mental energy
  • an active lifestyle
  • evening relaxation and unwinding
  • periods when rest and recovery deserve greater attention
  • a daily adaptogenic routine

Unlike stimulating botanicals such as guarana or matcha, ashwagandha is commonly chosen when the aim is not simply to create more stimulation, but to build a more grounding and restorative daily ritual.

Whole organic root from India

This product contains only finely powdered organic ashwagandha root, with no added ingredients. The whole-root format is ideal if you prefer a traditional, minimally processed botanical preparation rather than a concentrated extract.

Its earthy, slightly bitter flavour works especially well with cacao, cinnamon, banana, dates and plant-based milks.

Take 2 teaspoons (10 g) per day. Blend it into a smoothie, stir it into warm cacao, or combine it with plant milk and warming spices for an Ayurvedic-inspired drink.

The generous 300 g pouch provides approximately 30 daily servings at the recommended amount.

🌿A Root at the Heart of Ayurveda

Ashwagandha is a small shrub native to India and other dry regions of South Asia. Although its leaves, berries and roots have all played roles in traditional practices, it is the root that has become the best-known part of the plant in Ayurveda.

Its Sanskrit name ashwagandha is commonly translated in relation to the smell and strength of a horse, reflecting the traditional association of the root with strength and vitality.

🌿What Does “Adaptogen” Mean?

Ashwagandha is frequently described today as an adaptogenic plant. Adaptogens are a group of botanicals traditionally used during periods of increased physical or mental demand, with the idea of helping the individual maintain resilience rather than simply providing stimulation.

This is an important distinction. Ashwagandha is quite different from stimulating plants such as guarana, coffee or matcha. Its traditional use is more closely connected with restoration, resilience and maintaining equilibrium during demanding periods.

🌿What Makes Ashwagandha Interesting?

Ashwagandha root naturally contains a complex range of plant compounds, including withanolides, a group of naturally occurring steroidal lactones characteristic of Withania species.

These compounds are among the reasons ashwagandha has attracted considerable modern scientific interest. However, the natural composition of a whole-root powder is different from that of a standardised concentrated extract.

This product is simply the dried and finely powdered root. It therefore offers ashwagandha in a form much closer to the traditional whole-plant preparations used in Ayurveda.

🌿Whole Root Powder vs Ashwagandha Extract

Ashwagandha is available both as whole-root powder and as concentrated extracts, and the two forms offer different ways of using the plant.

A whole-root powder, like this product, is simply the dried ashwagandha root ground into a fine powder. It retains the root in its natural, non-concentrated form and is traditionally suited to mixing into drinks and foods.

An ashwagandha extract is made by extracting constituents from the root using a liquid such as water, alcohol or a combination of both. The resulting preparation is therefore different from simply consuming powdered root and is generally used in smaller quantities.

Some extracts are also standardised, meaning they are produced to provide a defined concentration of particular naturally occurring constituents, commonly withanolides.

Neither powder nor extract is automatically better. They are simply different preparations of the same botanical. Whole-root powder is particularly suited to customers who want to incorporate ashwagandha as a traditional powdered botanical into their daily food or drink routine.

🌿Taste and Character

Ashwagandha has a distinctly earthy, slightly bitter and root-like flavour. This is completely natural and one reason it is often combined with richer flavours such as cacao, cinnamon, dates, banana or warm plant-based milk.

In Ayurveda, herbs are traditionally incorporated into daily food and drink preparations as well as taken on their own, making a powdered root a particularly versatile way to explore this well-known plant.

Usage tips

Take 2 teaspoons (10 g) per day, mixed into a drink or added to sweet or savoury dishes.

Ashwagandha has an earthy, slightly bitter flavour, so it works particularly well with creamy, warming or naturally sweet ingredients such as cacao, banana, dates, cinnamon and plant-based milk.

Easy Ways to Use Ashwagandha

🌿Ashwagandha Cacao
Mix 1 to 2 teaspoons of ashwagandha with warm oat or almond milk, 1 teaspoon of cacao powder and a pinch of cinnamon. Sweeten with a little honey or maple syrup if desired.

🌿Banana & Ashwagandha Smoothie
Blend banana, plant-based milk, ashwagandha and a spoonful of cacao. Add dates or nut butter for a richer smoothie.

🌿Ayurvedic-Inspired Spiced Milk
Stir ashwagandha into warm milk or plant-based milk with cinnamon, cardamom and a small pinch of ginger. Add honey after the drink has cooled slightly, if desired.

🌿Breakfast Bowl
Mix ashwagandha into porridge, overnight oats or yoghurt and top with fruit, nuts and seeds. Its earthy flavour pairs especially well with banana, apple, cinnamon and cacao.

🌿Cacao & Date Energy Bites
Combine oats, dates, nut butter, cacao and ashwagandha in a food processor. Roll into small balls and refrigerate for an easy way to incorporate the powder into your routine.

🌿In Savoury Foods
Ashwagandha can also be stirred into soups, dhal, curries and other warmly spiced dishes. Start with a small amount, as its earthy flavour can become quite pronounced.

Tip: If you are new to the distinctive taste of ashwagandha, begin by mixing it with cacao, banana or a spiced plant-based drink rather than taking it simply with water.

A little history

Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) has a long history in Ayurveda, the traditional system of medicine that developed in India. Its use can be traced through Ayurvedic tradition for thousands of years, where the root became one of its best-known botanical preparations.

The Sanskrit name ashwagandha is traditionally associated with the horse, referring both to the distinctive smell of the fresh root and to the qualities of strength and vigour symbolised by the animal.

In Ayurveda, ashwagandha is classified as a rasayana, a traditional category of preparations associated with nourishment, restoration and maintaining vitality throughout life. The root was incorporated into preparations for people of different ages and was commonly combined with foods such as milk, ghee and honey, as well as with other Ayurvedic botanicals.

Although deeply rooted in Indian tradition, ashwagandha has travelled far beyond Ayurveda. During the past few decades it has become one of the best-known adaptogenic botanicals in Europe and North America, appearing as traditional root powder as well as in modern liquid and standardised extracts.

This organic powder keeps things close to the traditional preparation: the dried root itself, finely ground and ready to mix into food or drinks.

FAQ

🌿 How long does one pouch last?
The 300 g pouch provides approximately 30 days of use when taking the recommended 10 g per day.

🌿 Can I take ashwagandha powder every day?
The recommended use for this product is 2 teaspoons (10 g) per day. It is designed to be incorporated into a regular daily food or drink routine.

🌿 Does ashwagandha powder contain caffeine?
No. Ashwagandha root does not naturally contain caffeine, making it quite different from botanicals such as matcha or guarana.

🌿 What is the difference between ashwagandha powder and an extract?
Ashwagandha powder is the whole dried root ground into a powder, while an extract is made by drawing compounds out of the root using a liquid such as water or alcohol. Extracts are more concentrated, so they are normally taken in much smaller amounts.

You may also see withanolides mentioned on ashwagandha extracts. Withanolides are a group of naturally occurring plant compounds found in ashwagandha and are among the compounds researchers use to characterise and study the plant. Some extracts are produced to contain a specific measured percentage of these compounds.

This product is different. It is simply 100% organic whole ashwagandha root powder, without concentrating the root or adjusting it to contain a particular percentage of withanolides.

Choose the powder if you want to use the whole root in its traditional powdered form, mixed into smoothies, cacao, porridge or other foods and drinks.

🌿 How should I store the powder after opening?
Keep it in a cool, dry place away from light and moisture. The technical specification recommends storage below 20°C.

🌿 Can I use ashwagandha during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
No. This product is not recommended during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. If you are taking medication, seek medical advice before use.

🌿 Why is ashwagandha sometimes called “Indian ginseng” when it isn’t actually ginseng?
Ashwagandha is often called Indian ginseng, but botanically it is not related to true ginseng (Panax). The nickname developed because the two plants came to be compared for their traditional place in restorative and strengthening herbal practices. Ashwagandha actually belongs to the nightshade family (Solanaceae), the same botanical family as tomatoes, peppers and aubergines.
