How to make distilled water?

How to Make Distilled Water (or What to Use Instead)

If you don’t have distilled water on hand, you can easily make your own at home. Simply boil tap water and collect the steam by placing a lid upside down over the pot, allowing the condensed steam to drip into a clean container. This is pure distilled water, free of impurities and minerals.

Materials Needed:

  • Large Pot: A deep pot with a lid.

  • Glass Bowl: Small enough to float inside the pot without touching the sides.

  • Lid: Preferably one that is concave when placed upside down.

  • Ice: To aid in condensation.

  • Stove: For heating the water.

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Setup:

    • Place the large pot on the stove and add tap water, filling it about halfway.

    • Position the glass bowl inside the pot, ensuring it floats and doesn't touch the sides. The bowl will collect the distilled water.

  2. Invert the Lid:

    • Place the lid on the pot upside down. The concave shape will help direct the condensed steam into the bowl.

  3. Add Ice:

    • Place ice cubes on top of the inverted lid. The cold temperature will cause the steam inside the pot to condense on the underside of the lid and drip into the bowl.

  4. Heat the Water:

    • Turn on the stove and bring the water to a gentle boil. As the water boils, steam will rise, hit the cold lid, condense into water droplets, and fall into the glass bowl.

  5. Collect the Distilled Water:

    • Allow the process to continue until you've collected the desired amount of distilled water. Remember to replenish the ice as it melts to maintain effective condensation.

  6. Cool and Store:

    • Once done, carefully remove the bowl (it will be hot) and let the distilled water cool before transferring it to a clean container for storage.

No time to make it? Replace distilled water with filtered or boiled water that's been cooled. While it's not as pure, it's a good alternative for most DIY recipes like room sprays or pillow mists.
