A little history

Litsea cubeba, commonly known as May Chang, has a long history that intertwines with traditional medicine, cultural practices, and trade in Asia, particularly in China, Taiwan, and Southeast Asia. The tree, also known as the Mountain Pepper, is native to these regions and has been valued for its fragrant, lemony aroma and therapeutic properties for centuries.

1. Traditional Uses in Chinese Medicine
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Litsea cubeba has been used for hundreds of years. The fruit and essential oil were valued for their digestive, antiseptic, and anti-inflammatory properties. It was commonly used to treat issues such as indigestion, diarrhea, and stomachaches, as well as respiratory issues like asthma and bronchitis.
Litsea cubeba was also utilized to promote mental clarity and uplift the spirit, helping with conditions related to stress and emotional imbalance.

2. Spiritual and Cultural Uses
The tree has had spiritual significance in certain cultures across Southeast Asia. Its fresh, uplifting aroma was believed to cleanse negative energy and promote emotional balance, and the fruit or oil was sometimes used in religious ceremonies or rituals to purify the air and create a harmonious environment.
In Taiwan, Thailand, and other parts of Southeast Asia**, the leaves and fruits of the tree were used in daily life not only for medicinal purposes but also in culinary practices, where the fruits, resembling peppercorns, were used as a seasoning for food.

3. European Discovery and Trade
The western world discovered Litsea cubeba during the colonial period, when European explorers and traders began encountering the plant during their travels in Southeast Asia and southern China. By the 19th and early 20th centuries, Litsea cubeba essential oil started being exported to Europe, where it gained popularity for its aromatic properties.
The oil was used in the perfume industry, particularly as a cheaper substitute for lemon and lemongrass oils, due to its bright, citrusy fragrance.

4. Modern Uses and Growth in Aromatherapy
In recent decades, May Chang essential oil has gained global popularity, particularly in the field of aromatherapy. Its uplifting and stress-relieving properties, coupled with its refreshing citrus scent, have made it a favorite for use in diffusers, personal care products, and natural cleaning solutions.

Today, Litsea cubeba is widely cultivated for its essential oil, which is steam distilled from the small, pepper-like fruits. The oil has found applications in cosmetics, skincare, cleaning products, and insect repellents due to its antimicrobial, astringent, and cleansing properties.

5. Sustainability and Cultivation
The growing demand for natural and organic essential oils has led to increased cultivation of Litsea cubeba, particularly in China and Vietnam, where the plant is grown for commercial production. Sustainable practices are encouraged to ensure that the plant remains a renewable resource while supporting local communities involved in its cultivation and harvest.
